Complete rear end? Or parts/labor?

Toyota just called me back and they're telling me that I bent the left rear axle shaft at the housing.......housings fine, but the bearings will need replaced among other small items within that rotating mass - but all in all, the brake assembly is fine and the hub too.......total for the repair is $1255 for parts/labor.........now, my question is how much is it to get into a locker or something similar in aftermarket? Rather get opinions here vs. surf the web blindly and not knowing what I'm after........so what are you guys running for aftermarket rear axles?

 

Are you still under warrantee? I'm not sure why this repair wouldn't be covered under warrantee. And even if you were beyond the 36K miles - drivetrain warrantee lasts for like 6 years???

Aside from that...$1200 seems pretty inexpensive. Sounds like the bearings & axle shaft replacement plus labor charges.

So...you still need a new bearing. You still need a new axle shaft. Everything else is gonna be above and beyond that $1200 that Toyota quoted you. Aftermarket lockers (most expensive ones) are gonna be close to $800 and the cost to install it, plus gearing setup.... could run you an additional $1200 total ontop of the cost of bearing/axle shaft.

Ultimately...I'd fight with Toyota to get the repairs done under warrantee.

 

Is carrier Ok? If it is $1255 is steep price for axle, bearing and seal + 2 hours of labor.
You have TRD Sport right so your Limited Slipp should be working. but If carrier is bad (thats teh Limited slipp unit) then replace it with ARB buy new aftermarket axle, press new bearing on it install new seal and done ...

 

It won't be covered under warranty as it was damaged in an accident........truck slid out too far to recover and the rear wheel slammed the curb -- broke part of the wheel out and bent the axle flange where it rides at the housing.......worse yet, my collision deductable is set at $1000 since I've never wrecked yet -- until now.
I was just curious as to what these assemblies were costing in case I could get a complete rear for the same price as I'm paying for parts/labor.......thanx for the insight

 

Everything is good to go other than the left axle shaft/flange/bearings/seal.......housing is good too, truck operates normally other than the left rear wheel weeble wobbles when driving

and yeah, I thought the $1255 was steep too - but we're talking dealership pricing and labor rates, so I'm pounding my own ass there......just wanted it done right with OE parts -- and the truck has just under 50k on it

 

It all depends..... you've just gotta do some research. I've purchased old dana 44 axles for $250 each. I've seen axles go for $500 give or take a few hundred depends on what's in 'em.

If its a stock unit with same gears as what you have not..and you do the work yourself, could be very inexpensive (under $1000). But once you add aftermarkets lockers, gearing setups, & other parts...could run you upwards of $2000 depending on what you get and labor costs.

Basic install you can do yourself...but gearing setups & ARB install (for instance) should be done professionally.

 

just to chime in here.. a used axle will cost you about $1000 (or less) from a salvage yard/wrecked truck, etc..
I got lucky and got a locker read end off a members wrecked truck cheap.

thats just unbolt it from the leafs and swap.. easy.
a non locker axle will accept your LSD unit, the locking axle has a different sized 3rd.

oh FYI if you do replace the parts.. ALL axles from 2nd gen tacomas will fit,sport, OR, base, even the 5 lugger lol(same part #). so you might find an axle somewhere cheap.?

Ok so new shaft is $343.62 bearing is $20, seal is $7 (flange ??? you mean Bearing housing right ?? is $300
Two hours of labor (its not going take more then that) is 200

With all new parts thats around $800 so what they doing 50% markup on you ??
Just Go to junk yard and get left axle shaft with the bearing housing/bearing for $200 total. Install it and call it a day...

 

Sorry for being vague, the axle/flange assembly -- it's the flange that's welded onto the axle shaft.......mine is bent where it's welded

 

Ok so thats even worse, They trying to rip you off completely... (They are not in Christmas spirit for sure)

Look at www.car-part.com I looked there and found probably 40 -60 axles with the most expensive being $300.
Just start calling places around you and ask them how much they want for complete left side . I doubt its going to cost you more then $300 with some shipping. If you have garage its very easy swap. (make sure you buy axle for your year truck with ABS sensor attached)
and $1000 saved just use to buy your wife and kids good presents for Christmas
BTW: Replace axle seal with new one when swapping. ($7)

If I recall, drivetrain is 60k miles? I would agree that it's a warranty issue unless you did something out of the ordinary.

Well, thanks to all for the insight -- but I just didn't have the time to do the repair myself, and my garage is not finished or heated; temps here have been in the teen's and 20's so Toyota was happy to do the work for me of course.......We live in western Ohio and have had snow on the ground for almost a month now and my wife's car is FAR from "winter worthy" so we rely on my 4x4 Taco to get us both to work - our commute is relatively 80 miles round trip daily so the weather can sneak up on us throughout the course of a day, good road conditions in the morning don't always mean their good for the trip home.......so instead of gambling, I did what I had to do in a butt-fierce hurry.
Toyota ended up coming down on the parts pricing and labor totalled $250 ( 3 hours )
parts weren't too hateful at $420 for the axleshaft, but when they called about bearing replacement I gave them the "go ahead" since I didn't want to have a recurring problem later on........bad news is that there's a bearing assembly that ran me over $300, but the seal / circlips / misc hardware was only another $15........all in all, I was out the door for $1000 instead of the $1255 they'd originally quoted me.
Would have been over $1500 with their wheel ( 17" alloy thru Toyota was over $500 ) but I'd ordered in a refurbished factory wheel for $180 shipped........new set of tires are one the way and then I can tuck the spare back under the bed - glad it's done and everything is solid again........definitely being more careful now that I've been through all of this........I'm sure I spent more than I should have to get the truck repaired, but it was only down for 3 days.........so, thanks for the idea's fella's, but I was in a time crunch and had to get 'er done.
