Sent a log through our twin band saw, not knowing there was an old bastard file stuck in there from god knows how long ago. Did one hell of a number on our band saws.... bent 10-15 teeth right flat over. The file got removed and put on the shift supervisors desk as a memento. 659B05A0-154A-4659-ACB4-186DFC13F07B.jpg

Not usually anything we can identify. Sometimes old lag bolts from a tree stand, perfectly spaced throughout the log where the saws hit it... usually just that though, old bolts and nails.

We have metal detectors before our chipper mouth and grinder infeed, since those both utilize a vibrating conveyor with a fiberglass section for the metal detector to scan through. Our log line into the mill and to the saws uses a very thick metal chain pretty much exclusively, making it impossible to put a metal detector in there. For how often we actually hit a piece of metal in a log, we just eat the 10 minutes of downtime to change the saws. They were going to have to get sharpened after each shift anyways.

We change our band saws every 6 hours of run time, same with our bull saws. The bull saws are 3 1/2 foot carbide tipped circular saws, 12 of them sitting on an arbor shaft. That's what cuts the logs into boards before they're sent to the sorter.

Gotta Love the USPS granted lots of good people work there that have nothing to do with polices .

It makes no sense to me in any case to send a package coming to eastern Pa from Hudson Ohio via Grand Rapids Mi to come back East No wonder they cry for money to pay the big bonuses .

I wonder how much further West does it go ??
