I knew it was only a matter of time before this thread turned in to this....honestly surprised it didn't turn in to people telling the Chevy and Ford guys that they were idiots for ever liking their full size trucks lol

Our expectations are different im guessing.
2gr fks is an excellent v6. 3.6 pentastar sounds no quiter when its idling but whatever. Also you cant compare TT v6 to a N/A v6. 2gr fks will outlive any of those choices.

If you have issues beating kia off the line, than im sorry. Ive pulled away from full size v8s no problem.

AT is supppsed to shift wnen it needs to shift. There is no "hunting" or"excessive shifting" in any of my buddies trucks. After i read all this BS about the ATs, I was pleasantly surprised when i first drove AT 3rd gen. Either guys dont know how to modulate the throttle or have different expectations.

Impossible that your 3rd gen has plenty of power and drives great. Just read the forums

 

I loved my Ford pick up Wish i could have kept it.

 

Honestly most newer trucks with automatics shift like shit. My Sierra, both my F250s...all shift happy in the name of "efficiency" I typically drive auto trucks in manual mode anyway since it's hilly around here. I've never driven an AT Tacoma though but I can't imagine it's much worse than any other truck with a 6 speed auto.

 

The only thing I noticed from going from 'Full Sized' to 'Mid Sized' (And I've had a few 'Mini's' as well ... 72' Datsun/89' Mazda B2000) was just having to 'duck' my head a bit lower getting into the Mid Sized. (I'm 5' 10")
Once inside and seated ... Felt just as big as anything else.

Actually I said it has plenty of power "for what it is". If someone needs to haul or tow heavy they should look at something else. I don't and for me it's the perfect compromise. And let's face it all vehicles are a compromise.

At the most, i will be towing a small camper or a small boat, so taco is perfect for that. I needed something smaller for the trails too.

Dont know why so many folks shit on the 3rd gen. I was driving the other day and was telling myself that this truck is just getting better and better, i love it. Its a great vehicle for the right lifestyle.

 

Sorry the thread went in a different direction. My 8 speed trans in my chevy and AFM is not that much fun to drive honestly the tacoma felt plenty quick. I pulled on the highway and it hit 90 pretty fast and I was not being rough on it at all. Still thinking need to drive it again and for a longer drive.

 

Longer drive is important. These tiny trucks have zero level of comfort in seating (power adjustable seats are limited in availability). Everyone has a difference of opinion based on something else relative.

Your plenty quick is a fair assessment but also less two cylinders / 3.91:1 gear VS 8 cylinders and likely 3:42:1 gear, etc. Almost like comparing apples to oranges but getting a mixed end result for comparison. I like apples and oranges.

I think you are giving this purchase good thought and consideration all around. Best on the decision.

 

Yeah the seats aren't great, that was the first thing we noticed after I brought the truck home. The side bolsters are way too narrow towards the edge of the seat for some reason, I'm used to it now but when I get out of my Tacoma and drive my girlfriends RAV4 I get a little jealous haha.

 

Busting a downsizing move can be as tough as comparing apples to oranges.

 

Power adjustable seats are limited in availability? The TRD Sport, TRD Offroad, Limited, and TRD Pro all come with the 10 way power driver's seat. That's not exactly limited availability.

Zero level of comfort in seating? That seems a bit harsh lol. My Sport Premium has the leather 10 way power driver's seat and I think it's pretty comfortable. Granted seat comfort is personal preference thing so what is comfortable for me might not be for you.

In his original post he said he was looking at a loaded TRD Sport. If he means with the premium package he will have the leather 10 way power driver's seat. Even without the premium package he will have the cloth power driver's seat.

Having said all that I think your suggestion of an extended test drive is a good idea.

 

The seats in the premium are 20% leather and 80% cheap plastic.
