Wake up to a message from the dealership...again mentioning using my insurance or the insurance from the stereo guys, down to the dealership I go.
The got the new components in, started the truck and promptly fried them, they dig in further.
They showed me where they had cut off factory applied wiring harness tape to expose the wires and that there were exposed wires from the heat from the short melting away some of the insulation. The exposed wires were behind where the speedometer is.

I'm told an ohm meter was used to find at least the offending wire that has the short, but that wire feeds a number of items.
I told them that it was sounding like they wanted to know who was going to be financially responsible for any further repairs before they went any further. They said that they still can't pinpoint the short and say "this is it, right here". I asked them how can anyone assign financial responsibility if they can't prove out the exact cause of the short. The remote start was disconnected and the stereo head unit wasn't even in the truck when this played out.

Next step is ordering a new wiring harness and more components, as well as bringing in a factory rep, a rep that can't even go in person to the dealership due to Covid craziness, so he is working with pictures sent to him and talking on the phone.

I told them I shouldn't be on the hook for a single penny for this, and neither should stereo guys unless it can be proven out it is on them...which they currently cannot do.

Good grief, what a rollercoaster. By chance, does your dealer's service department happen to be where the bipolar disorder support group has their weekly meetings?

Holding off on the mention to lawyer up, things are still a work in progress...no refusal to continue looking into it...no outright refusal of warranty coverage. If they want to ultimately refuse warranty coverage, I expect them to positively identify the short and prove that it was due to the install from stereo guys.
I told them straight out that the short must be identified precisely, that the reason for the short must be identified, and that "it's this pink wire right here" isn't enough...root cause analysis needs to happen.
I'll exhaust every avenue before defaulting to a lawyer, but I have no problem resorting to one if need be.

My 12 hour night shift is calling my name...

May want to look at the stereo..... I had an aftermarket stereo installed and months later had flickering lights on the dash..... took it to the dealer and they could not figure it out.... they said it might be the stereo.... sure enough I had a Crutchfield wire harness that had frayed wires coming from the crimps.... removed it, soldered and shrink wrapped every wire and I am good to go.... shorted wires do crazy things...

Man, at least have a lawyer on standby. Sounds like they're gonna try to turn this into a shit show.

My opinion changes drastically depending on whether I'm sitting at the plaintiff's table or the defendant's.

No they still hate you. Think of it like a colonoscopy. No one likes them but they can save you a lot of pain later.

I got that line from a family member thats a lawyer. He became a lawyer to save all those downtrodden wrongly accused folks from the “system”.

He became a public defender. Several years later he quit and took up estate law. Why? Because not one of the people he defended was innocent.

Yeah, criminal defense I don’t do. Wouldn’t be able to defend guilty people.

off topic, but just retained a lawyer for my moms estate who just passed away, seems like a great guy so far. They arent cheap, but when you need them, you need them.

Serious question. I have seen dozens of threads here suggesting members "lawyer up" and sue Toyota to remedy a problem. Can anyone remember someone reporting they did this and the results?
