Just in case you aren't aware (I wasn't until recently) you can pay someone to OVTune your truck for considerably less than buying everything yourself.

The first post in the thread linked below has a list of people offering this service and their location.

I am on the fence as well. Pleased with the way it drives (understanding its stock tuned for maximal MPG) but would also appreciate a little more pop and the ability to stay in 6th gear on a slight incline,LOL

Do it. It’s worth it! I didn’t have too many complaints but wasn’t totally thrilled with the rapid upshift low rpm bounce to 2 gears lower thing. Truck behaves perfectly now, feels much better. Mileage hasn’t changed.

I have a pretty light foot and I noticed about the same in town(17-18 with winter blend,1mpg more non-winter) and 21+ on hwy with winter blend. Summer blend gas gets better mpg overall. So many factors but that is a rough estimate and I’m running stock 245/75-16 Toyo at3s in load e. I’ve put about 2000 miles since the flash. Drives a little better than the stock tune once the tranny re-learned my driving habits

Screenshot_20210121-185248.jpgDoes anyone know if this is the latest update for a 2016? Sorry in advance for the dumb question but I really not sure if I can trust my local dealer. I had this update installed in August or 2019.
    Thanks for any input!

Yes you have the latest update. Good news is you can have someone flash your ecu to 2.0 vftune for a small fee. Im very happy with mine . Will never go back to stock tune.

I got it done in December while I was off work for the holiday stretch.

Drives like a whole new truck. Hot damn. I had no real drivability concerns, but on the drive home on sections of the highway I know it would hunt for gears in the past it didn't. Drives so much better.

I've seen my MPG get better if anything.

Tomorrow will be a big test - I haven't had much highway time yet, tomorrow doing about 7 or 8 hours on the highway, so that'll be the real test.

Anyone on the fence - I highly recommend going to Toyota and getting this done. If Toyota had done this tune as stock, this forum would be missing half their posts on the 3rd gen section. I didn't dislike the stock tune on my 2020 (bought in Dec 19 so it was an early build), but I understood the complaints. This ECU flash fixes all that.

I dropped from about 20mpg to 18mpg for around town but I live in a mountain area with lots of ups and downs.

I’m having a hard time figuring out if there is a way I can update from 04B01 to 04B04 without paying the dealer. I have a 2016 Tacoma and the dealer wants $155 to do the update.

I bought OV tune but they suggest I make the update before they send a tune. Also I have no idea what the hell 04B04 is or does or why OV Tune can’t install it with their tune.

There is so much information I’m sure someone has posted if there is a legit way to update to 04B04 at home but I haven’t found one that seems reliable.

You can update it with the cable you got from ov tune and a copy of Techstream. The download files you need and instructions are at the link below.

Because the latest ECU TSB makes a much better base for the tune. The tune is layered on top of the Stock software.

For those of you who have completed the TSB and did an OVTune on it... what are your thoughts. I just did the TSB for my 2020 and did the OVTune... it’s solid! Anyone with 2018/2019 tune packs from OVTune?

Just has TSB-0092-20 performed on my 2019 TRDOR DCSB when I took it in for the 15k service. This ECU update finally give the Taco some balls, and essentially makes it feel like you are driving in ECT Mode all the time. When climbing moderate hills, the truck is now able to smoothly accelerate without feeling like it is struggling. Definitely recommend.

Just got flashed today. Will let you know. In the drive back from the dealer I noticed zero difference. I don't know what my original code was. I will tell you that I thought the truck was already very good. Especially vs the old 2018 TRD OR I had on loan with old old codes.

Based on when your Tacoma was built, it may be it was done at the factory. Mine is a 8/2020 build and it was already updated from the factory.

Possible. But now I have driven it rest of the day I DO notice a difference. On the highway: less 4th gear 6th gear 4th gear 6th. Now it's 6th OH Wow THERES a 5th gear?! Sometimes forth. On the back roads it's way way smoother. Less hunting and a WAY more leisurely and soothing back road pace. Less gear hunting drama. My wife was always asking why I was flooring it. Now that's alleviated.
Thumbs up. Not voodoo magic better but better. Dealer rep did say a flash was applied per my request.
