F150 owner considering making the switch

5'5" and bump your head?? I'm 6'1" and have never bumped my head in a Tacoma... As for the OP, I traded out of 2017 F250 so the change in size is substantial (I have co-workers with F150's and the interiors are pretty much the same between a 150 and a 250, maybe a bit more space in the 250. 90% of the time it is only me in the truck so moving down to a Tacoma has not been a big deal. The gas mileage is not substantially better (15-16 Taco vs 11-12 F250 Gas) but 4-5 MPG certainly saves money over the long haul. Everyone has their opinions, so no interest in getting into a flame war, but there's no way I would own an Eco-Boost. Two of my co-workers have them and both wish they never bought their trucks. Nothing is free and getting that much power, out of such small engines, means they are under constant stress that a NA engine just doesn't have.

 

Never happen! Diesel will stay low because we need food. The whole country runs on Diesel, trucks & trains.

 

It'll climb also.....just watch.

Food costs and cost of everything will climb due to increased shipping costs.

Even ships run on diesel.......

 

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. For me, my project vehicles (all of which, run, are registered/insured, have good paint, drive and get used regularly) are how I spend a fair amount of my free time. They’re my only vice I guess you could say.

That said I don’t get sitting on a project vehicle for years like the Camaro you mentioned. I will be doing a Subaru swap on one of my VW’s in the next couple of months but I don’t expect it to be parked for more then a month. I just don’t have the space to have dead vehicles laying around. To each their own

 

If i swapped vehicles as much as you say you do the last thing ide buy is a tacoma. Life's too short to drive boring vehicles. Go buy a raptor

 

It will go up at first, but it will hit a high of $5. while gasoline hits $10. imo.

 

I feel your pain OP. I've been through my share of vehicles over the years. Part of it was getting bored with the vehicle and the other part was not getting what I really wanted to begin with. My recommendation would be to test drive multiple times. Big difference in power, space, and capability, so make sure you're comfortable with the change. Also, make sure you get exactly what you want and don't settle. Then mod it however you want it. It sounds like you'll still get bored with it in a couple of years, but who knows? I guess the good thing about the Tacoma would be that it won't hurt quite as bad other vehicles if you decide to trade in 2 years.

 

I traded out of a 2018 supercrew STX 4x4 w/ the 5.0. The power train was pretty incredible, with how light the truck was with ~400 hp and the 10 speed it was fun to drive. There were a few reasons I traded out of it and went to a Taco though. First, the 10 speed was hard shifting, ticking, and doing a lot of random things that Ford said were within spec but worried me for when I would be soon out of warranty . Second, the truck had a musty smell coming out of the A/C that Ford couldn’t fix and even winter/hard freezes wouldn’t correct. Lastly, and the one that finally caused me to trade, was I couldn’t get comfortable in the STX trim manual seats for trips longer than 10-15 minutes.

The TRD OR 4x4 taco is similarly priced to the STX 4x4 after incentives and I got way more features im looking for in the taco with hopefully less of the issues I was having with the Ford.

I also don’t tow, so that made the decision easier as well

 

Realistically I don’t think anything will ever make me happy. I’ll be honest I’ve only ever kept 1 vehicle for longer than a year. I honestly have a problem and just get the itch to get into something else. I love changing vehicles and I have no idea why. Just like different things at different times. By now I’ve found out that I can nit pick anything and come up with negatives about it.

 

Our economy is 70% consumer spending so if everyone drove the wheels of their cars, the big portion of the economy would collapse. Not saying it is the way it should be, just how it is. I am a firm believer in not telling people how to spend their money, as long as they don't expect someone to bail them out when they make bad choices. My only suggestion is to live below your means and have 3-6 months of expenses saved...then do whatever you damn well please....

What features you want?

Other than a locking rear diff and the drivetrain, you can probably way more easily do a DIY bodge for the F150 and get what you're looking for. Hell, the F150 forums have even been putting the adaptive cruise into those trucks aftermarket! That seems a bit sketchy to me but, hey, it can be done.

Unless a Tacoma fits in your garage and an F150 doesn't, I would just drive the Ford. The 2.7 is a great engine. You have the 6 speed in that one aye? If so, yeah keep that for sure. 10 speed maaaaybe I could be convinced to trade it in.

 

Well, you're honest,,, I'll give you that. If the $600 monthly payments (plus more for taxes and insurance) for the rest of your life is worth it you, then more power to you, it's your money!

I just came out of a 2014 F150 XLT that I really liked. I got the idea of downsizing after getting into a Colorado for a rental and found myself simply enjoying the drive a lot more.

It’s just more fun to drive a mid-size. But it is smaller in the cabin vent a lot. I don’t mind that but my wife does!

 

I have the 10 speed in mine. Surprisingly no complaints really. Cold it shifts very hard. But warmed up it’s smooth. It is touchy sometimes though.

 

I’ve always felt the same way about the Tacoma. I had a ‘15 F150 Platinum and went to a TRD Sport. I loved the 3.5 Ecoboost, but no longer had any need for a full-size (didn’t really have a need to begin with but got suckered in with twin turbos) and my extended warranty was about up.

The Tacoma is considerably smaller, but I agree that’s what makes it fun to drive.
I don’t regret my decision at all. I’d say see if you can do an extended test drive and see if you’re ok with the size/power difference.
