Just upgraded to Focals. The stocks ones are the most pathetic micro magnet barely paper lowest quality plastic shart funnels I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It takes a lot to shock me but the materials are on par with a water bottle from a vending machine at Aldi’s. The good news is they fly straight like a frisbee right into the dumpster. They weigh the same as a plastic fork and the magnet looks about the size of a potentiometer on a crappy guitar. Smaller than the mangos hands. The urine color foam might have been white before being soaked in formaldehyde and sent in a shipping container across the ocean (20 years ago?). The cone has an annoying shape almost like origami at the party plus store where you buy disposable supplies for a New Years party.

There is company somewhere in the world that decided to make the lowest quality speakers possible and then decided to pitch these to car companies to install in 40k dollar trucks.

    RIP

Agreed but I am surprised how good they sound for what they are. I swapped for the Kicker speakers.

You bought a base quality truck - why do base quality speakers surprise you?

Also, the magnet is a neodymium magnet. Is is much stronger than a typical speaker magnet, allowing it to be much smaller, and much lighter

Which focals did you end up choosing? I like the looks of the flax series, but I've heard they sound nice too.:D :rockband:

es 165k components. I had focal twinB6 studio monitors in a studio used to work in. Amazing quality yes slightly overpriced but never a regrettable purchase bc 100% quality.

got some good info from destin here on forum a real expert. Speakers were from forum member. Learned a lot installing them, could do whole thing again in probably 2-3hrs including everything and door treatment. Taking apart the truck trim is really easy just buy some replacement white trim clips on Amazon and triple check connections.I had to dremel the tweeter brackets a tiny bit but all simple.

fwiw some dickwipe in nyc wanted to charge 800 bucks for the install, which took me about 4 casual hrs with essentially no specialty tools except a crimper, multimeter and mini torch for heat shrink. I did however break out the more sophisticated setup to eq the crossover and gains with a measurement mic and some software. I did all 4 channel discrete and eliminated back door speakers.

Thanks! I'm sure those sound incredible dialed in. I've read a few of Destin's posts and he definitely knows his stuff. Mr. Marv designs some neat sub boxes too. When I make up my mind I'll be doing the install myself as well.

Many years ago I had a small town shop install an alarm and a small system in a 1st gen reg cab tacoma (amp, sub, speakers). Oh Boy, What a mess! They butchered the wiring harness, hacked seat levers off, broke pieces off door panels and left the window crank sitting right up against where your knee meets the door. Plus, they left me with a sub box that was practically built in kindergarten art class. Best of all, the truck would often refuse to start. I ended up selling that truck a year or so later.

i just replaced my factory system in a '21...if you look closely the factory speakers are made by pioneer....i was kinda shocked that they even had the ability to produce such a low grade speaker....i did kicker plugnplay tweets / infinity reference doors / cerwin vega powered 10" behind ds rear seat / pioneer mini amp / kenwood dnx576s

My biggest gripe about the factory system aside from mediocre sound quality is the lower wattage that the head unit sends to the rear speakers vs the front. Most factory systems are low, but I don't understand Toyota's logic in designing it that way. I can't hardly hear the rears.

My 07 Jeep Wrangler was the same way with the “rear” sound bar speakers in the roll bar. If you faded it all the way back, it was literally inaudible if the vehicle was moving.

Yep, exactly. Sure it's a micro motor but neodymium magnets are WAY more powerful than a typical ferrite type. Neo magnet based speakers are actually the most expensive type. If I had to guess, they decided to use that design because the smaller magnet structure on the speaker allowed them to clear the window track without a spacer. They sound darn good for what they are. Most people think the speakers are the weak point of the stock system....then they replace their headunit and realize that was the part that was trash the whole time haha.

The rears should just be for fill and for rear passengers. Your front stage should be nearly 100% of your sound. Most really high end competition car audio builds don't even run rear speakers (myself included).

The Kicker component speakers sound better than the OEM stock speakers but stock really isn't bad at all. I think the biggest benefit was to replace the tiny full range speakers in the pillars to tweeters.
The cone material of the OEM speakers is some kind of fiber (paperesk or paperish); I would imagine the lifespan of the OEMs will be limited especially if you listen at higher volumes.

On principle for sound quality I understand the defense of how “surprisingly good” some might think the stock speakers sound. A rare earth magnet of that size isn’t exactly costly btw maybe a dollar to OEM. They weigh nothing and are made of cheapest plastic and thinnest paper. On sheer quality of materials and effort to have any resemblance of even an entry level aftermarket speaker they are absolute trash. I’m going to find the pioneer logo on them, did not know that. Even 20 dollar replacements are an upgrade in terms of quality. And we are talking about a 35k truck not a 5k Ford Festiva, which is a badass golf cart btw.

12” shallow subwoofer, dynamat entire floor, ceiling tweeter pods in back once I get some extra $, and figuring out how to run all audio through room correction software.

Definitely gonna post a long detailed thread so others don’t have to scour entire site for info. It seems like Dustin Meeks is the resident expert I have consulted all his posts and dm-ed him. Super nice knowledgeable guy.

This stuff is relatively easy compared to handwiring outboard guy and troubleshooting music equipment with oscilloscope and getting zapped. In relation to this thread I’ve seen so much crap poor musician gear as a reference point.
