This Can't Be Good!

Looks like I sprung a leak between my trans and my driveshaft.
Is this something I can fix myself without a lift and air compressor tools or should I take it to a professional?

 

It definitely ain’t good. Looks like transmission fluid and that is something.

 

replace the trans output seal. not a big deal

 

Other than checking the trans fluid, it's a 30 minute job.

TNShooter has a good video. Fairly easy, make sure to check ujoints while the shaft is out.

I sometimes bash the dust shield off to help with ease of install and to clean it up nicely.

 

I failed to mention my truck is a 2wd Prerunner automatic trans.

 

It's obvious haha. The 4WD trans has a bolted flange and pinion.

 

Just watched the video. That's waaaay too easy looking. What's the catch? No seriously, what's the catch?

 

Now for something semi related? What would suggest to use to clean up the mess that the leak and time has caused? Basic engine degreaser? Brake or electronics cleaner spray ?

 

Chock the tires.
And set the E-Brake.

That’s the catch. Unless you want to risk catching the truck as it rolls over you.
This is BAD. Real BAD.

When you disconnect the driveshaft, and the E-brake is not set, the rear wheels are free to turn.

The catch is catching all the fluid coming out the back of the trans when that slip yoke comes out

 

I suggest some diluted simple green, or purple power. Both have worked great for me in the past. Make sure to re-apply any undercoating you wash off when doing this.

 

The catch is checking and adding fluid into the transmission. A dipstick would be easy but luckily there is a good thread here on how to do it.

 

My Prerunner was is like that.
There's revised double lips seal by toyota.

The best degreaser I have found is Super Clean. Comes in a purple bottle. It is very strong and can degloss paint also so be careful what you use it on full strength.

 

Brake cleaner will work. I also have a spray bottle filled with isopropyl alcohol that I use when I need to clean up non painted areas.
