What is the sheet metal fire block between floors called? There is a plate around the HVAC ducts in the walls.

I want to run some blue flex conduit past it from the attic to the basement. What is the best way to do this? Drill out the sheet metal? I reciently found out that the fire foam is not actually to code which is exactly what I did to seal the cracks. Fortunately I didn't seal up the wall yet.

A little more info and a few photos? Commercial building? Residential? Timber-frame? I’m not aware of sheet metal fire stop between floors in any building I’ve seen.

Residential. Built in the 70s. Timber frame

This image isnt mine but it's very similar. I have a rectangular HVAC return going in the basement. The is an area around 1sq foot next to it that is cover by the sheet metal each floor has these plates.. If the sheet metal wasn't there, there would be a clear path from the basement through the 1st floor, 2nd floor, and all the way to the attic.

To reiterate my question, I would like to run blue plastic conduit through that area. How can I do it safely?

It almost sounds like there was a chimney or flue there previously.

Do you know if the house was built with central AC? I've seen something like that when homes are retrofitted with central AC. The HVAC guys work better with sheetmetal, not plywood, so they just holes back with sheetmetal.

that is B-Vent (double wall for flue gas) there needs to be no combustibles touching it so metal stock is used ether flat like shown or there are trim rings that are pre-made for making it look nice when it has to be seen.
it is just referred to as flashing buy most Tin Knockers

Watching This Old House this morning and they were discussing the house electrical system in Rhode Island. According to the electrician, the 2020 code says you have to have an external disconnect now moving forward. He stated it was primarily for utility and EMS purposes. I guess will we be seeing more of it on the East Coast now.

That is the case and you also needed an external disconnect for years already when the panel inside wasn't directly behind the meter outside

Installed a water reciculation pump, was taking forever to get hot water to opposite side of the house. Now it should be faster. Easy install

I usually install a dedicated hot water return loop with a recirc pump on it on all my houses , plus we fully insulate all the hot water lines with pipe insulation even in interior walls and floors

    well worth it
