HOW GOOD ARE THE FACTORY TOOLBOXES WITH ALUMNUN LID& BLACK BODY

 

My guess is that you can get much better for the money. Factory boxes are crazy expensive.

 

Please don't yell, it hurts my ears.

As for your question, I recommend shopping around before you just out and buy the first one you see. There's always a better deal.

The factory Tacoma saddlebox lists for $599. I got one thrown in on my deal for cost $515. That's not cheap but a lot of the top line boxes like Weather Guard will be that much and more new. Personally I think Weather Guard boxes are the best (certainly one of the most expensive) boxes out there and I think the factory Toyota box is really close in quality with a sharper more distinct look. I feel good recommending it.

FYI: Even though it's coated with a product similar to Rhino Guard inside & out I still put a sheet of rubber mat in the bottom of mine.

 

i just picked up the slim line one from Lowes..for a fraction of the price, I now have a toolbox that does the job.

 

I had one for a little while. It didnt last long due to the latching part failed and had to force it open. Its too expensive for the quality. Get a weather guard or even a lowes brand. You'll be a lot happier in the long run.

 

Well we have a fleet of 12 trucks all with various saddleboxes (Weather Guard, Kobalt, UBS plus 2 or 3 other brands) and the Toyota box is build most like a Weather Guard. It has the full hinge, push button from either side thumb lock assembly etc. Plus it goes one step further with the Rhino Guard type of protection on the interior. That's a nice feature to keep the aluminum dust down as the box gets used. I'll keep everyone posted on how mine holds up.

I will say I certainly can't agree that a Kobalt box is anywhere close to a Weather Guard or a factory Toyota box. It's built like the ones at Advanced Auto Parts very thin with a comparably weak locking system. Now that's not to say a Kobalt won't do the job of keeping some tools dry, it will. But it's not contractor grade and you can crow bar one in about 10 seconds so just don't keep anything real expensive in it. I advise going to YouTube and watching some Weather Guard comparison videos to see how easy the competition is to get into.

 

What do you expect for $150? I got one, and I like it.

 

UWS! They have been the best I can find and for the price you can't beat em

 

I love mine.
No holes to drill and when it comes off you won't be able to notice.
Real sturdy.

I like the fact it's not super deep so you can slide things under for more length.

I've taken a lot of boxes off trucks and i think for me it's the best one.

What ever works for you , that's what you should get.

 

Hey it's a good deal to get any new or like new box for $150.

I was just responding to TacoRich kinda slamming the Toyota factory box. He had bad luck with one & has a right to feel that way but I think if you ever actually compare one side by side you'd see what I mean. It's built pretty darn well & looks cool to boot.

I looked at it this way. I saw the Toyota factory box as being expensive (but still one to two hundred less than a Weather Guard which I believe to be the gold standard). And I see a lot of the stuff I liked about my Weather Guard box on my last truck incorporated into the Toyota factory box. As you can see others that have it think highly of it as well.

Enjoy your new box... they come in very handy and just like Kobalt tools they work.

 

UWS has a good reputation and they sell at a decent price point. We have a couple at work.

 

I have to agree with you. I had a Weather Guard on my last truck and it was heavy and had the best & smoothest locking mechinisum I've seen. To me Weather Guard boxes are like WeatherTech floor liners. Simply the best.

The factory Toyota box is a little lighter than a Weather Guard but still up there pretty good guage wise, has a similar locking system and I liked the Rhino spray coating on the inside (of course you can line any box and solve the aluminum scraping dust problem).

I know what you're saying about Kobalt they are thin. You can hit the side or the bottom with your hand and they vibrate. A Kobalt wasn't for me because I carry a box stuffed full of heavy tools & I was already spoiled by having a Weather Guard before. But hey the Kobalt doesn't look bad and if it was just to have a box to throw a few hand tools & tie downs in it would work. Everybody doesn't need a commercial quality box.
