My wife hit a deer one time ... she was looking at the radio so she didn't even brake. As a result, the impact flung the deer to the side. At the time I thought that if she had hit the brakes, it may have done more damage if not come over the hood?

My wife hit a pig once at highway speed in our Vanagon, late at night when I was dozing in the passenger seat. The Vanagon has no hood so the pig just flew sideways. Woke me up though!!

Since this is the 2nd recent thread talking about urban recoveries and helping helping people on the side of the road, I'll offer my opinions on the matter. Take from it what you will.

I look at recoveries like this similar to the differences between being an urban paramedic, and wilderness first aid (WFA).

Now bear with me, there's a bit of a story here...

When I was a climbing/outdoor guide, I was certified WFA. WFA is a relatively basic 16 hour course on top of basic 1st aid. That said, it gave me quite a bit of leeway for when shit hit the fan when you're in the boonies. I was allowed to do things that people with far more training (i.e. EMTs and paramedics) can't do in an urban setting, most notably, clearing a spine injury. If you're out in the woods and someone gets injured, being able to get the victim walking or and least move them, could potentially save their life because of the extreme difficulty of extracting that person on a stretcher. During training, we did exactly that. There were usually 8 of us and it was absolutely brutal carrying this person over logs, rocks, stairs, narrow passageways, up steep hills, etc... And we even got to choose the smallest person to be the victim, lol. It's important to note that while as a WFA I was able to clear a spine injury in the wilderness (which is defined as 2 hrs from definitive care), I was absolutely NOT allowed to do that in an urban setting.

In an urban situation, even paramedics or even a spinal surgeon who happens to be in the field don't clear a spinal injury. You treat is as though it were broken, and only when the CT results come back do you clear anything. There is no need to rush because there are actual experts in easy reach, and it's easy to get someone to definitive care, even on a stretcher.

So, in a situation where I'm out wheeling, and I come across a similar semi-rollover situation, I'm going to help and do what I can to get that person and their vehicle (if feasible) out of the wilderness. Even still, that comes with limitations, and I'm not going to risk further injury or damage to MY vehicle just in the name of "trying to help". Rule #1 is to not make more victims. Also, if I F up my vehicle, now we're BOTH stuck.

Now, take that exact same situation where someone is on their side, but on Main street. There is no way in hell I'm going to try and help upright that vehicle, even if I were fairly confident I could do it in the wilderness. I will absolutely stop and render 1st aid if necessary, or make a call, but there's no way I'd flip that truck over. I'm not a wrecker.

So, my point is this: Having a winch on our trucks doesn't make us qualified to flip over a vehicle on the highway, anymore than me having WFA makes me a doctor, even though is SOME limited situations, we can do similar things.

The only situation where I can see people being desperate to upright the vehicle before the professionals show up is if they they are the "no cops" types. If that's the case, no way in hell I'm putting myself in the middle of that shitshow.

People don't care. I got hit and run, caused me to flip and spin off the road onto the sidewalk, in my scion.

Approximately 40 cars passed and not one stopped.

I didn't want someone to flip me back over, I would have appreciated someone stopping to see if I was alive.

bingo spot on people don’t care. I like the thread before yours the emphasis on “MY vehicle”. Nuff said.

in the OP the person wasn’t messed up and pulling a car up onto all fours is a lot easier than carrying a person two hours in the woods. But wouldn’t want to endanger the fully equipped truck with a 13k lb winch and all sorts of suburban body armor and recovery gear. Got places to go snorkeling.

I would like to see the typical tow truck driver who would be called in for this, dragging the truck across the street onto his hydraulic bed while scanning the street for more violators.

100 trucks drive by and I guess none of them have experience asking if a wrecked victim is even Ok. Clearly a residential throughway like street not a typical highway. what a crock of shit. Another Florida story.

    Key is a good dude

Did you even read my post?

I said MY vehicle in reference to a wilderness situation where MY vehicle is the potential escape route. I don't want to damage MY vehicle in case that's what WE have to use to get out. If there are injuries or an otherwise wilderness survival situation, it would be asinine to damage my vehicle to the degree that now we're all stuck.

    Again, don't create more victims.

If this is what you guys picked up from my posts, there's no point in discussing it further.
