Clamshell

I had 2 subs in a spec sealed box in my previous car so I just cut the box in half and stuffed it in the rear of the cab. Didn’t sound good at all since the sub was angled forward, and I couldn’t recline my front seats, but I like the placement of the sub/box. Mounted the box using 6 existing holes in the cab.

 

I don’t know man it probably sounds awesome but it kinda looks like dogshit

 

first mistake was cutting the air space in half and thinking it was going to sound good.

that install looks rough.

 

Picture looks bad cause bad lighting but carpet is clean and smooth. Best part is how functional it is

 

Just a bad picture with the bad lighting. The first box I cut in half that was 2 subs in a sealed spec box, so cutting the box in half using only one sub is still a spec box for one sub. But now I’m on a isobaric ported set up, custom box... hits lows! Gotta love the jl audio 13w6. The box was redone, the first isobaric box (pictured in the first post) was just to test to hear how it would sound before making it presentable (no pictures taken with good lighting). Everybody likes the exposed bolts makes it look beefier lol but I really like how it sounds and how functional it is with the space I used.

 

Just went out in the rain to take a picture. Still in the dark but I do have LED lights now so it’s a little better lol. I like it too that it’s different from anyone else.

sorry can’t see the sides of the box but it’s super smooth now. This post was just to show a different style of system that we could do in our trucks. Sorry if my install is not to your liking.

 

Well like I said I’m sure it sounds good and makes some serious low bass but it looks like you got Snoopy‘s doghouse in your back seat. The install is clean I just don’t like the look of the box itself then the speaker is up past the window so it’s going to block visibility and invite someone to break into your truck. Sorry if it sounded like I was talking down to your skills that wasn’t the case at all I just don’t like it but it’s only an opinion I’m sure lots of other people will be into it.

 

thanks you for your opinion. As for it looking like a dog house, with the angles this box has, it looks pretty trippy in a good way, it catches your attention. But being a bass head I am and already having these speakers I would say this was the best practical way to use them. As for visibility it doesn’t block much view since I have a tailgate spoiler that is blocking more of the view and I do have a rear camera so it’s not an issue. Having unwanted attention is an issue though the only issue. My brother and cousin got their cars stolen, in those cases I learned not to blast your music before you park in public and always use your alarm lol. And I again I like to be different maybe not for everyone and their goals but it met my goals.

No worries bro I just wanted to explain why I had to create this box the way it is. If I didn’t have those speakers to begin with, I would’ve used a smaller speaker that’ll make the box narrower which would be more practical. I mean who the heck would put a 13.5” speaker in a access cab that still wants to use the rear seats but I think it turned out well. Lol

If you don’t mind me asking do you have a system? Or plan too? If you do how would you want your system be?

 

I’ve been working on little bit at a time for awhile. I also have an access cab so most likely I’m going to loose the rear at some point. I have hertz 6.5s in all the doors and a 8 inch sub to add some bass while I continue to save for the next part. Next up is crimping tools so I can make all the cables I need after that I can finally get my alternator from sdhq it will give me 270 amps with about 170 at idle I think. After that comes the battery not sure if I need to add a second or if I can get away with one. Then I should be able to power a good size amp to push a couple 12s shooting for around 1500 rms or so. The doors are amplified now so my mids are pretty loud so I think I’m good there. All this started because my daughter was shit talking my stock system and told me her moms x system was way louder then mine and that simply will not do. I figure probably 18 months or so and I should have it done if nothing unexpected comes up and yes I know I have problems but I don’t care. I’ll try not to make shithead comments in the future but sometimes for reasons I don’t understand I’m just an asshole lol.

The box does look beastly in person so I could see why you say it’s a dog house lol I wanted gray carpet but audio shop didn’t have on hand.

but yeah you can see my tailgate spoiler/head rest blocks more. As for the magnet it doesn’t block an important view. The only time I use the rear view mirror is to check if there’s a cop behind me lol. Since my windows are tinted the speakers isn’t obvious either, but I do like the cool factor of seeing the magnet lol.

if you plan to lose your rears down the road you will have more options for a set up. My wife would never let me take the whole rear. I did see some people put the box onto one side, only taking one seat, but I personally don’t like the look of that.

I have a JL audio 1000/1v2 amp feeding the two 13w6v2

 

The only thing is I can’t lift up the bottom of the chair so I have no access to the storage space beneath. I don’t have anything in there but would be nice to be able to open it.

This set up is air hungry though! For example blasting it with the windows up sucks, even if I have one window fully open. Right when I drop the other window you can significantly hear it and feel it get louder. But the system can even get a bit louder when the doors are open and that’s only when we are tail gating lol. Wish on the access cab the rear windows can go down.

 

Lol it’s a beast. Did you have to do anything to your electrical system to power it? I’m curious how many watts the stock set up will support. You have to upgrade to run something that size right?

 

I have the big 3 upgrade and AGM battery. Lights do dim, so I installed LED’s for less wattage consumption but still has “good” output. That’s why I didn’t do the famous UHU. I was looking into getting an higher output alternator but for now so far so good lol and this is also supporting my other JL 300/4 amp. The amps I have delivers full power at any voltage between 11 and 14.4 volts with JL Audio R.I.P.S technology.

Do you have any particular speaker you want to use? Not sure what your daughters mom has but yea you gotta show them what a real system sounds like lol

 

Originally I was thinking a couple Rockford Fosgates would probably do it. I’m pretty impressed with the 8w3v3 so I might stay with JL. I mean it’s small and in a super shallow box but does a good job for what it is.

 

Rockfords are nice, but yeah I really like JL audio products for SQ.

i got a funny story to share. The owners cousin of a sound shop was prompting RF all the way, since RF rep just came. He had RF everything in his 4runner so we did a sound comp with my JL audio system and everybody that was there, picked my car for best balance of loudness and clarity. My 2 13w6 in a sealed box, it would flex my windshield. It rattled my gas cap cover off, had to weld it back on lol. 2 weeks after I went back to the sound shop and the guy has JL everything and better models than mine lol I’ll never forget that though.

you could add another 8” and still would fit in the middle as another good option.

 

i went ahead and ditched the passenger rear and middle seats in my 2nd gen double cab and built a custom ported box for my 2 JL 10w3’s and it is louder and cleaner that most systems that I’ve heard. I love JL’s products and I would like to look into a W7 but they are so pricey...

 

I’ve spent the last couple evenings looking into the jl series. Looks like the one you are running is becoming harder to find unfortunately. I want one of 13w7ae,s in the worst way but I think the price will probably keep me out of that one. Having two of those I bet you could have rattled shit in the house from your driveway lol.
