    I think you are correct.

    Google says...
A 2.4 GHz connection travels farther at lower speeds, while 5 GHz frequencies provide faster speeds at shorter range. ... A lot of electronic devices and appliances use the 2.4 GHz frequency, including microwaves, baby monitors, and garage door openers.

Our internet set up is pretty crazy, glad you got some help over here @Cativelense

So we have 1 gb from spectrum, to our basement. Then out to a telephone pole, which then uses a big antenna to shoot 500 feet to our business. Once there, its run underground to another building, and then shot another 400 feet to my MIL house. We will be cutting out one step once spectrum offers business options but none so far in this area. I have internet most areas outside around the house now and will work on shooting it to the river this summer.

I have a friend in town who does all the stuff for me as I have no idea. He has total access and can control all my shit from his house. If I didn't know him my entire life I'd be sketched out. But when I can just text him an issue and 9/10 times he can fix it remotely its worth it.

If you look past the hughes net old dish you can see the white one on the pole, we have the same one on our roof at the barn which takes it in. My MIL gets 40MB/S with how its set now, she will get 300 or so once we adjust it come spring.

We have the spectrum 400mbps with Eero pro 3 nodes. We can pick up the various cameras throughout the 1.5 acres. We both work from home; wife full time and me every third week. Never have any problems with coverage or speed on the property.

Just got the buy in from the big boss man, I'm good to go!

Leaving the night of March 17th, traditional style swinging by the hotel in CT that night and should be at Red Ball around midnight or so, then out to PA and kip up for the night. My plan right now has me coming back to RI on March 29th. Basically the only certainty is: Amarillo on the 20th, Portofino Hotel sometime, and then home. Otherwise, pretty much winging it. That stretch across the south is probably going to be one of my highlights. It will hopefully be warm but not too warm - it would be nice to be able to kip up without the truck running for HVAC this time!

Looks like a good trip. The wife and I were supposed to go to Iceland for our honeymoon at the end of August. Obviously that got canceled, so we decided last minute to go out west for 2 weeks. I packed up a bunch of camping gear in a lockable rubbermaid bin and an ice chest and shipped it out UPS to the hub in Salt Lake City. We flew in and picked up the rental (Nissan Pathfinder :bananadead:) and thre the gear in the back. We covered ~4000 miles in that two weeks. Moab, Canyonlands, Arches, Gunnison, Pikes Peak, Devils Tower, Yellowstone, Craters of the Moon, and a ton more. It's cool to drive out too, but I've seen the middle of the country and have little desire to return. We also had a limited amount of time.

We were out there 4 years ago and started in LV hitting the Hoover Dam, Mojave for a night, then up to Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, and Phoenix for a few days. I love it out there. The scale of everything is just insane.

It's interesting to hear what everyones setup is. I agree 100% though, get the router on your main floor. Running the cat5/6 may be painful, but it's the only way to guarantee good coverage.

For the past ~10 years I have used various configurations of a linux firewall and access point. Last year I scored a good auction deal on a Dell R310 single CPU server and a bunch of Aruba access points. I'm currently running OPNSense as my firewall (edge appliance), a Dell Powerconnect 10Gb switch (overkill but another auction score), my R710 VM server, and two of the Aruba APs. You need to know what you're doing to set it up, but enterprise hardware, even if it is nearly obsolete now, is awesome.

I did the trek Michigan down to Texas last time. The Ozarks were sweet but Oklahoma was holy shit flat. I don’t disagree. I want to do the cannonball run trip while I’m still up here near NYC. And the Michigan upper peninsula. But after this I think my treks through farmland will be few and far between.

once I move to Austin I have like 10-12 some off road trips I want to tackle. One being up to tuktayuktuk and or barrows AK. That will be like a month. Some short 5 days some longer like week and a half trips. So. There’s some to be had.

I figure right now is the time to do some of this. I can’t go to Canada or Mexico so it limits me to the contiguous 48. I get to go and see a lot of the country even though I can’t stop in a lot of places, so I’m not really tempted to stop and spend a day or two somewhere randomly. I get to explore some cool places and cities and make notes of where to go back later.

for example. Louisville. Lovely place. I’d go back for a day or a stop along a road trip. Buffalo. Never again. Lake Michigan I’d spend a few days there. The Ozarks id go for days. Atlanta, I’ll go around next time.

this time I’ll actually get to TN. I intended to get to TN but then decided to hold the train when I was going through Louisville and ended up being very okay with that decision. But I still want to get to TN.

That was the nice thing about being out there during COVID. There were far fewer people, and we were camping so we could stay away from them anyway. The National Forest campgroungs, while primitive and off the beaten path, are some of the most peaceful and beautiful places to be at.

We went this past June, and I plan to go west again this June. Last time was a quick 2 1/2 week 10,000 mile cruise from coast to coast, now we plan to spend some time in an different area each time we go back.

Have you heard the times they had been getting doing the cannonball when the pandemic was in full lock down mode? Wow!

Looks like it might be Ubiquiti stuff. I use their "air fiber" equipment to get a link to a parking lot camera and to the fieldhouse on the football field at the high school. It works great and it's pretty inexpensive.

Yup, basically. 2.4 could theoretically have offered similar speeds but it isn't being developed much at this point.

5 GHz scales better because it offers a wider band for more channels. 2.4 is a nightmare to get working well in a large building with a lot of APs because of the limited amount of channels. You tend to get a ton of retries and an overall bad RF environment. In a dense environment like that, lower range is actually a positive. I throttle the power back on my APs so they are basically just covering two classrooms each.

2.4 won't go away in the near future in the home because some vendors go cheap and only put 2.4 GHz radios in things. It basically doesn't exist in the enterprise world though.

Only router I've owned lasted a few years, wasn't a high tech one either..Cisco or Belkin I think.

Middle of the house is ideal so it's not necessarily upstairs/downstairs. My old one was upstairs but that was also the middle of the house and it was better than when I went Xfinity this summer and it lives behind the TV. Not the end of the world though..

Still in this never ending car search. Final month push here.

Any reason to run away from a “high milage” 4Runner? I’m seeing some with 100-125k on the clock. Obviously the less miles the better but if I can get into a comfortable price point with a little higher milage that might work best. My current rig has 220k on the clock so I’m not too worried.

That's a tough one to generalize. It all depends on how well the previous owner(s) treated it. I've seen cars at 30k beat to death so badly that they would be lucky to make it to 50k. I've also seen 300k cars that still had plenty of life left in them. Don't be afraid to ask to bring the vehicle to an independent mechanic for an inspection. If you are very interested in the vehicle and the seller is hesitant you can offer a nominal payment for their time and effort.

You up for a trip to upper peninsula this summer?

Oh yen’s they were posting like sub 27 hours consistently. Average 110 is just insane. But have to consider through the middle of nowhere you can probably hold 150 no big deal.

Yeah some of these recent times have been crazy.

    my favorite part is rental.

my actual favorite part is that the Audi did it all done up and customized and then like a month later someone did it in a rental mustang

not necessarily bad. I have a 2020 I bought in dec 19 and has 21k on the clock already. And I’m about to put another 7k on it in March. So in about 18 months I’ll be at around 30k. Looking to be at probably close to 45 by the end of year 2. Mine has been a mix of highway for all of it and also beat the shit out of it on the trails.

get underneath. Check it out. If there’s no trail carnage and the previous owner didn’t put skids and sliders on, I’d say 100k on a 4Runner drive train is still clean.

what’s your budget? Can you hold out and see what shakes out with the Broncos? I’m actually thinking when the Tacoma goes I might end up in one of those. Depending on the drive trains.
