just some window vents and a tonneau cover - for now...
Can anyone out there tell me what stock axles (that can be found at a junkyard) will fit a 2011 Taco double cab that are also good for towing?
In particular, I don't have much money - so the dreamt about Dana 60 won't fit my budget! and I'm looking to upgrade my towing so I can purchase a (heavily used) fifth wheel. I am aware that I will also need a brake upgrade; but am open to any other upgrades/mods you think are necessary for increasing my towing ability.

The axle has very little to do with tow capacity. The gear set would though. But you have bigger problems.

The suspension, brakes, engine and transmission are all inadequate for that load.

And you want to put a 5th wheel in a composite bed?

Seems you'd be better off using a truck actually built to handle such a load.

I think you need to invest in a larger truck if you wana tow a 5th wheel, I've seen a few Tacoma's with goosneck hitches in them and I thought that was crazy.
It's just not a big enough truck for towing that kind of trailer even if you could beef up the suspension to handle it, not only is it unsafe because the truck is so light there's just not enough engine and braking power there for that kind of a load.

The only 5th wheel a Tacoma will be towing is a Scamp and you don't need any fancy upgrades for that. If you want to tow a 5th wheel that most people think of you need a truck actually built for towing. No amount of upgrading a Tacoma will get you there.

This post is a joke right? Just an attempt at humor, correct? A Taco pulling a 5th wheeler, that’s definitely humorous. You don’t have much money and can’t afford a Dana 60 axel but can I guess afford a 5th wheeler. Yep you’ll definitely need a brake upgrade. In fact you’ll need a whole truck upgrade. Perhaps you can find junk yard parts to upgrade your Taco to a Ford F-250. Let us know how this project progresses and post pictures. Definitely want to see a 5th wheeler hooked up to a Taco.
Sorry if you think I’m being harsh but the post is bizarre.

The real problem is the Tacoma`s short wheel base!!

The second problem is lack of budget .

Anything can be designed and built with enough budget.

Till you were finished you would have a Tacoma Cab and Bed mounted on a full size drive train so many fabricated parts one failure would stop you till the new part was built

It is a interesting thought buying any of the big 3 Automakers Full size Trucks would be cheaper.

Composite doesn’t matter lol. Even on full-size duallies the gooseneck receiver gets bolted through the bed and to the frame lol.
You have a point with the rest tho

The biggest cheapest axle to put under the Tacoma is probably an FJ80, you’d just need to weld on new spring perches. That won’t help you tow anything better, it will just increase the unsprung weight.

If you want a fifth wheel get a full size truck. Leave the mid size pickups to picking up a few sheets of plywood.

    IT'S FRIDAY!

Just because a vehicle has a hitch doesn’t mean it can tow whatever is attached to the ball, regardless of how monstrous the stock or modified engine’s torque and horsepower numbers are. The same applies to towing with a gooseneck or fifth-wheel setup.

Understood. But a sandwiched sheetmetal bed (between gooseneck and frame) would seem to be more durable than composite.

Even though the gooseneck is bolted to the frame the bed floor does bear some load even with the stellar strength of the Tacoma frame.

the bed doesn’t take any weight from a good 5th wheel setup such as B&W. If it were me I’d get a gooseneck hitch and then something like this, not that I’d get that setup for a Tacoma but talking for a truck with a real leaf springs and tow rating.

I like your optimism but I warn that you are being quite naive.

    You could probably retrofit a 14bolt pretty easily. I bought a 2010 14b for $300 at a junk yard

that would be something, but then you’d be stuck with an 8 lug rear and need an adapter, or have to buy custom hubs, unless you bought the 6 lug semi float 14 bolt.
