I just bought my 2021 SR5 with the intention of it being the last truck I will ever need. Am 51 now, so hopefully will get me through till I go blind, or crazy, or whatever keeps me from driving!!

Did you monitor transmission temps at all while towing? I’m about to buy a travel trailer and have seen several people suggest that on here.

What kind of trailer are you looking at? We have been thinking about a small camper in the next year or two.... wondering if I need to upgrade my suspension before then or if that's just the excuse I need to tell my wife to upgrade my suspension.

    Work in progress...
I didn't. Tell Ya the truth, the first few miles almost turned around and unloaded. It didn't feel like it could do it. I decided to give it a chance on the interstate. Step by step I figured out what it could do.

    Looking at three different styles:
    Forest River A-frame style
    Trail Manor trailers
    Forest River Nobo series

All have models well within the towing capacity, hitch weight, etc. Ideally, I’d like to keep the trailer under 3500 pounds so that with people and gear, I’m at a max of 5500 lbs. I can’t imagine I’ll have that much gear, but either way, I’d like to keep the truck under the max.

Of the 3, my preferred model is the Trail Manor so that I’m not pulling a sail behind me (that’s also the allure of the a-frame, plus my fiancé has a thing for inefficient use of square footage). They also offer a ton of space for the weight, but they’re also the most expensive by far.

Well, not a complete waste, and here's why.. (I didn't realize the 'why' till later after HS and went to community college and got an AA in Mechanical Drafting ... Which I never actually used to get a job, but that's another story.. LOL!)
Drafting taught you how to read plans/blueprints/schematics. You may have sucked at it, or hated the actual 'doing' it, but it gave you a good understanding of what you where looking at/reading ... (Especially if you had to draw up your own plans for any of the the other industrial arts you were interested in.) So, there was a reason for the madness... LOL!

I didnt watch his video, but I take all of that with a grain of salt. I have seen WAY TOO MANY videos and bits of facts and advice on here that are just flat out wrong. Not like, change your oil at 10k, but things like "yes, I know for a fact, the oil filters on the 3rd gen v6's are the same as the 2nd gens V6' type of wrong. Thats just an example. My own example: I needed to drive 1700 miles down to New Mexico to pick up my new boat, there werent any local and I didnt want to order one. I asked someone on a Chaparral forum a particular detail I needed to know before I drove down there. Drove there, and lo and behold, the 'expert' on the Chap forum gave me the wrong measurement on a detail that I needed to know. I dont ever think people give wrong info on purpose, but it happens a lot. On almost every thread.

    Exactly!
Drove my last Toyota 4x4 for 30 years.
I'm 59 so if I can get another 30 out of the 2021 SR5 on order then I figure it'll last until the kids take my keys away. My Dad was driving up until 3 months before he died...at 92!

I'm 53 and plan to do the same thing - if this truck can last me 20-25 years (when I probably shouldn't be driving anymore) then I'm happy. I know Toyota makes reliable vehicles as long as you take care of them; follow the guidance from the manufacturer! A buddy of mine has a 2004 Tacoma, did the regular maintenance and now at 200k+miles; still has the original clutch! That was a big factor in my Tacoma decision.

Am I keeping my keeping my 3rd gen for a long time? Maybe-maybe not. I've had it going on 5 years and I plan on keeping it the rest of my life.

Many say that they plan to drive a new ride until it turns to dust. But times change, tastes change, and eventually some new sexy mistress will come along and catch your eye. When I bought my Corvette, I said the same thing; going to keep it until I die and pass it on to my kids. 6 years later I sold it to buy my Taco. The only vehicle I currently have that I do plan to hang on to is my FJ Cruiser. It's the original model year (2007) and they quit making them in 2014 I think. It is by far the most fun and capable 4WD vehicle I have ever owned. I occasionally have folks approach me and ask if I am interested in selling it and the answer is always a big fat "no!"

    Working on it ...
I traded in my 2002 TRD off-road in December 2019. It blew a head gasket. Original rear brakes, original clutch, original alternator, original starter, original AC ... I toyed with replacing the head gasket because I had recently done the water pump. But it was a 17-year-old truck with 213,000 miles on it. So went with a new one.

you’re 53 now and say in 20 to 25 years you won’t be driving anymore? I don’t know I plan on still driving when I’m 73 or 75. My mother was 97 or 98 when she stopped driving! And that was only because we told her she had to stop. She kept complaining for the next couple years that she could still be driving

I want to keep mine forever and ever but....

I blame all those damn engineers for coming up with new inventions that makes us buy all the new kool chit. Like, who wants to get-out in the mud and lock front hubs right? (The young guys here be like, huh?)

I mean, take your basic carpentry tools. For years they stayed the same 110v a/c powered with a separate chuck you never could find. And now, no more cord, it comes with a built in level and light. But best of all, no cord or separate chuck needed.

Same for the nail gun, pneumatic gun and everything else. You see where I’m going here? It’s their (engineers) fault.

Man, let me tell you. I was happy doing my job with what I had before till something new came along. And why didn’t they put the light and level on the first generation drills right?

Now when the 4th gen comes out, I don’t plan on buying a new one.
Unless of course it can fly or run on just air.
