    Welcome aboard!

I was in Walmart the day they released, unknowingly. The closest location to us doesn’t have them and the poor associate was getting mobbed by people asking. The wife found a Kroger that carries them close to us :spy:

Best celiac/gluten free friendly dessert out there are macarons. They're tricky to make, mostly because they're time-consuming and finnicky when humid, but not to bad if you have a convection oven. Most of the flavor comes from the filling. I've even used an avocado-based butter alternative for my dairy sensitive friends for "buttercream filling". And you can add just about any flavoring- my favorite is lavender

Wait? I'm the first? I'm never the first! Takes forever to get stuff up here... let me savor the moment...
On sale even! Buy 2 or more they're $2.99 at Albertsons

I ripped into the package in the parking lot :anonymous:  They're actually pretty good! Its been too long to remember what a real oreo tastes like but I like them. And I like the Glutino cookies too. I'd be fine with either but if I had to choose I'd maybe go with the real Oreos. The cookie part has a nicer chocolate flavor and its not as dry as the Glutino ones. And the filling is creamier - that's where the Glutino ones fail.

My boss has a roommate he's moving away from soon, and I really enjoy talking to her while working. I've brought in breakfast a few times that she can't eat, and I know the feeling (I have a paralyzed stomach, so I can't eat much of anything at all).
I'm headed to the store tomorrow, and I'm wondering what kind of ready made breakfast foods those with celiac gravitate towards. If I can't find anything ready made, I'd love maybe an easy muffin recipe or something similar. Hit me with your favorites!

Krusteaz makes a GF Blueberry and Coffee Cake/muffin box mix. I love them both and keep a couple on hand at all times. They don't require anything special ingredient-wise - just the standard eggs, milk, oil, etc. Udi's makes premade muffins as well but I'd rather do the baking myself. The Udi's ones will be in a freezer case.
If you do bake something I would suggest getting a disposable aluminum pan or use muffin papers if you're going to bake something at home. Your cookware may not be as clean as you think and depending on how sensitive he is any trace of gluten could be disasterous.

I'm curious to try these! the glutino ones (like most gluten free snacks) seem like they have a gritty texture

Oh, thank you! The blueberry muffins sound good! I think I've seen that brand at the store I'm planning on going to, so hopefully I can find it. Thanks!

I would add... a glass or stainless bowl and stainless utensils for mixing are a must. Gluten gets into silicone and plastic, so please avoid using them!

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do great!

So new to the forum, almost, but a funny story along the subject lines: wife is corn, gluten, and numerous other things sensitive. Go to a restaurant, she tells the waitress: I have severe sensitivity to gluten, corn etc... What can you offer me as a substitute or make special? Waitress replies - oh that's easy well take care of you, we have whole wheat pasta...! That's a no shitter, you have to verify everything and know your stuff.

Sorry, thanks for letting me vent.

I'm finding it getting easier going out, but you definitely have to know your stuff because nobody is going to be as careful as you! It can be incredibly frustrating trying to explain the situation and getting the nonchalant "there's no gluten in that"... and skipping over the fact that it could be prepared in the same work station.

I can't tell you how many stories I've heard when first figuring out food allergies... just finishing some appetizers at a restaurant, feeling sick, and everyone trying to make you feel better by feeding you crackers, only making it worse.

A teacher in a classroom with CD couldn't even be in the same room if you microwaved something with gluten.

Crazy how sensitive some are! But once figured out makes such a difference!

I was thought to have a gluten sensitivity for 6 months- I went GF the whole time... but turns out I have a sensitivity to something in processed meats, certain cuts of pork, and just about anything in the garlic/onion family. The worst is when restaurants add "truffle" oil to things- it's usually fake- garlic infused olive oil- makes me so sick!

I have a friend who can’t walk into a bakery without breaking out in hives! He was diagnosed a few years ago and once his system was totally clear, his sensitivity sky rocketed

I know what you mean! Went to a family reunion in the small town where my grandparents grew up. About 30 of us went out for pizza, forgetting my cousin's 2 yo was allergic to eggs. Usually they would make him a special crust, but in such a small town they don't have any allergy friendly foods in restaurants yet. To top it off he ABOSLUTELY loves pizza. I felt so bad eating it in front of him we ended up taking him out for some special ice cream (egg free) while everyone else finished.
Definitely makes me appreciate all the options and alternatives that are available to me in CA

that'd be awful! I like to cruise through the bakery section of the grocery stores just for the smells of the fresh-baked stuff. Always an awkward exchange when an employee asks if I need any help... um, no. I just like to smell the bread, I can't eat it.
