Colorado River Monsters (fishing)

I'd be down! Will probably go another weekend here coming up. I know Deckers gets fished a shit ton. See people there year round we when go wheeling at the Gultches.

My buddy and I started up near the inlet to Cheeseman reservoir and worked our way down near Deckers

 

Looks like they dropped the flows on you, always makes fishing tough for a few days when that happens.

A little secret is the Platte at the gulches is an amazing fishery. Don't tell anyone.

 

I was thinking about that. Been down to the end of all the gulches soo many times, hard for most people to get down there

 

Some people hike in from the other side, but that's big time lion canyon. Many people have seen cats in that gulch. Same thing where the 2 forks meet at the hotel. My buddy has seen 2 cats fishing that stretch.

 

I was thinking the same thing before I read your post. I tried researching them a year or so ago and couldn't find anything on Google (thankfully). I went down there a bunch this summer and was pleasantly surprised.

The gulches will remain nameless.

 

Just an FYI- but FS just permanently closed all but 1 gulch 4x4 trail down to Platte. You can do it but you will have to hike like the last 1/2- 1 mile from (County border) down.

 

Dang, when did that happen? Looks like there is a trip report as recent as 11/30

It's a very long story but in fall 2020 the FS posted their review/ closure that closed these trails. Basically came down to Park county zero support of their part of trails, thus the closure by FS at county line (above the Platte). History of FS review https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=48214

Yep, literally at County line. Pink are the Gulch trails "decommissioned" in FS speak.

 

I've always gone in down the east side through Teller. There's still drive in access to some trout

@Kerbouchard and @JDM, how’s the tying been going? If you guys are going small, might look into getting midge jaws for your vices if you haven't already. I’ve got a peak rotary and the midge jaws for it were $35-$40.. I’ve tied 24’s on it. Would like to try 26’s just to do it...
Anyway, tied these up tonight for a buddy. Size 16 with a 2.8mm tungsten bead and about 8 wraps of either .010 or .015 lead wire to help get it deeper..
