New 2020 head unit. Buying?

Has anyone done a 2018 w/ JBL to a 2020 w/ JBL conversion? If so, what is needed? Throwing around the idea of doing this if I can do it for a reasonable price and keep all the stock functions... though I wouldn’t mind losing nav since I’ve literally never used it once since I bought the truck.

 

@Aje0010 I'm doing the same thing, buying the conversion harness from AHH to install an Entune 3.0 in my 2017 TRD Off Road (Currently has Entune 2.0). Did the USB Harness that AHH made you connect to the factory USB port that is already installed in the truck?

 

My harness will be here Saturday but the gentleman I spoke with said that with the additional usb harness, the stock usb port will work. When you order your harness, you will need the main harness and the additional usb harness, I believe.

 

Yes the harness was $135 includes shipping and the usb harness was $40 extra but was full plug and play. Mine comes on Saturday too. I have a 2019 non nav sienna to install.

I just ordered a 86140-08180 Sienna stereo with Navigation (non-JBL) for my 2017 TRD Off Road with Navigation (non-JBL). I was wondering if someone with the same conversion would be able to give me a list of the two harnesses I would need to order? Thank you!

 

Successfully did the swap today. Nav is gone as expected but I hardly care considering I have android auto now. Everything worked perfect with the harness from autoharnesshouse. Instead of using the factor usb port, I used half of the harness they include and then plugged my usb directly into the harness and ran the cord out of the vent directly under my hondo garage phone mount. Very clean, only like 3 inches of cord sticks out. Still can't figure out how to get the entune apps to work because mynew Toyota app is showing my VIN as 2019, therefore won't let me look at entune 3.0, it still wants me to use the dedicated entune app suite app (which is only for 2.0).

 

@Turning180 From what I've seen autoharnesshouse.com is your best bet. They have to build the harnesses custom for you and they don't have it listed on their website. So nobody can give you a link to the harnesses because a link doesn't exist. Email
inquiry@autoharnesshouse.com and explain your situation and they'll tell you what you need. They're super helpful!

 

I tried both nav and non-nav head units from a 2019 Sienna in my 2019 Tacoma. As far as I can tell, everything worked perfectly with both except for a mismatch in the multi-information display theme and the entune theme. The defaults line up well enough but red in one is not red in the other, for example.

 

I noticed that as well. I’m glad to say that I got it working. Side note, the rav4 knobs don’t work on the sienna. So now I have a pair of those for sale.

 

Yea, it’s annoying enough that I think I’ll eventually swap it out for a 2020 Tacoma nav head unit if I can ever find one for a reasonable price. The 8” screen would be nice anyway.

They’re kinda hard to come by with integrated nav tho... Might be a while. The Sienna head unit should do nicely until then, I think. Say, @TRDCal, how did you find yours again?

On the knobs - I was going to try Tacomods knobs - I had a pair of them for the 2019 hu and they were awesome. Wonder if they will have the same problem as the rav4 knobs on the Sienna hu?

 

Car-part.com, searches wreckers all across North America. Local one here had one for $500 last year so I jumped on it. Looks like they have another but price has gone up abit (Side note: $2250 from ToyAuto!!!):



As for the camera, picture quality is the same as my previous radio. Would I want to watch a movie in that quality? No. Is it good enough to hook up a trailer or not run into things? Yes.

Quick update on my harness, autoharnesshouse got alittle delayed but I paid for the additional harness I need on Friday. Estimate was 10 days to build and ship it out so I don't expect to have an update for you guys for another couple weeks.

Going rate on eBay for the 86140-04230 - same as the ToyAuto - is around $2k right now, not sure why that part# is going for so much ... funny enough I don’t think that part# has integrated nav like yours.

Is your part # the 86140-04250, or something else? I have a post on here somewhere where I’m keeping track of the features of all the different part #’s.

Just got a prototype from him yesterday, soldered it in place last night and it worked perfectly with the Sienna radio with nav. First time I’ve had the nav box working. (No soldering needed normally, he’s been helping me with this for a while - I told him he didn’t need to send me a whole new harness, I’d splice the last connector in myself).

I speculate the wiring is the same for all of the Entune 3.0 radios within feature sets (eg nav/non-nav, jbl/non jbl, etc), so you should be all set.

 

Depending on which part# your head unit is there are a bunch of folks lurking in this thread will gladly take it off your hands. Some of us like the oem fit, finish, and features. Time to turn that hot garbage into cold hard cash.

I could be wrong but I think it’s as much if not more about the camera than the head unit. I’ve been tinkering around swapping the radios between my tacoma and my wife’s Sienna, and her backup camera is way better than the one on my Tacoma with the exact same head unit.

 

Yes mine is a 86140-04250 (Canada spec w/ nav). Presumably the same hardware as the USA spec but different software which limits the traffic and weather functions and we don't get nearly the amount of 3rd party apps you guys do.

The harness he is sending me will need to be spliced in as well (12v, GND and vehicle speed), which I don't mind doing. Thanks for being the guinea pig on this, can't wait to get this thing working 100%.

Why do you keep chiming in with all the negativity?

I won't be doing this upgrade. I can see why other's might want to. I'm a luddite and don't care if my i-phone can pair to a head unit seamlessly

 

Dog shit or not I'd prefer to keep all OEM capabilities and keep the OEM look.

The closest I could get would be to do an Android head unit, which from a cyber security point of view is absolutely increasing my vulnerability footprint as these units are typically made in China and do not get the continuing updates required to make them secure. The OEM head unit, while not updated as often as even a Chinese unit, is closed source which makes it a matter of reverse engineering to crack. That in it of itself should make people wary.

But also, I'm not looking for every feature under the sun, I am content with the capabilities of the OEM head unit and would prefer to add just the capability I want which is Android Auto and Apple car play, without losing ANY capabilities.

Finally got this working. Had some delays due to personal reasons and then I wired it incorrectly at first which added further, unnecessary troubleshooting. Bottom line, autoharnesshouse harness worked and this 2020 navigation system is working 100% in my 2018. Love android auto and I prefer this headunit over the original. It still feels like an OEM unit but it at least feels like an OEM unit from this century.
