Wow over 400 mile range. Now if they can ever recharge one in 5 minutes without exploding the battery it might be worth looking at.

One big question I have about going all or mostly electric vehicles, I haven’t seen any talk about increasing the electric grid to handle the load. Right now in summer, there have been rolling black outs in places, so won’t that just get worst?

I would love a hybrid Tacoma, with a small gas or Diesel engine to keep my batteries charged and electric motors at each wheel.

Couple problems with this. The plaid plus isn't even out yet, so they can say all the numbers they want but it is subject to changes and cant really be used as a comparison until it is available to the public. Also, you're comparing the highest model Tesla to a base model corvette tuned by Hennessey. So both cars aren't widely available and just aren't good comparisons. And then there's the HUGE price difference. Let me rephrase my argument a bit since I originally didn't feel like going into depth on my post. We don't have the tech yet for a non-modified performance electric car to be a viable competitor to a performance traditional combustion car (top speed wise) in the same price range. I'm not against electric cars at all, I just think it's too early to put a death date for combustion cars since we don't have economical and performance comparable electric tech yet. This is why some of the modern hyper cars are hybrids (Mclaren P1, La Ferrari, 918, etc.) You have the acceleration from the electric motors, but the top speed comes from the combustion engines in them.

I'm sure you know a lot more about this than I do. I was just doing some Google fu for shits and giggles. I imagine for most people tho the 0-60 is way more important than top speed. I mean, how many are really driving 120+?

A little of this and a little of that.
Eh, GM can’t keep light bulbs illuminated on their vehicles, so yeah, this is not going to be easy for them.

I’m all for electric vehicles, especially autonomous driving ones. The Rivian truck excites me, and I like the Tesla cars as well.

There’s a good deal of electrical grid infrastructure that needs to be done before we go all electric. The nuclear option is the best, but after the Fukushima accident (2011) in Japan, nuclear power is a prickly topic.

Electric is great for trucks. Electric motors make as much torque at 1 rpm as they do at max. The motor isn’t the issue, it’s the ability to charge. Can you imagine being on a trip and having to charge a battery for several hours as opposed to a 10 min fill up? The battery packs can be heavy and their manufacture and disposal are an environmental nightmare.
Aside from the charge issues, most of the replacement parts and service industry will die. I know some of it will change over, but it seems much of it will not be necessary. For the consumer it sounds good, but if your job relies on it, not so much.
How about the massive loss of fuel tax? The government isn’t going to just shrug its shoulders and say “oh well”. What about the cost to build new generating plants? Nuclear generation pretty much died after Three Mile Island.
Hybrid (I call them inbreds) seems like a better idea. Trains, submarines, many ships are hybrid platforms. A small diesel to generate and all that sweet low rpm torque. That sounds good.
Full electric seems like a good idea for purpose built vehicles like farm equipment, mail trucks, local delivery, et. al. Take some of the demand off fuel.
The lynch pin will be the ability to build better batteries. Quick charge, more capacity, lighter. Or, build a power generating system. Just remember, the government will be there every step of the way to tax and control the whole thing to their advantage. There is no free lunch.

Regarding the thing about all government vehicles going electric is funny to hear as a Forest Service employee since my work truck is a 2013 Silverado. 2013....
Theyre not replacing the fleet anytime soon

I'd like to know how the fire departments both city and wildland would handle electric vehicles. How would you keep the water separate from the electricity? o_O What would OSHA have to say about it? Not to mention the potential issues with ambulances or police cars.

Our Energy Policy seems to be heading to a mess, looks like we are going to be cutting out reliable sources that power the grid with no equal replacement all while ramping up electric cars at the same time.

I'm waiting for a plug-in hybrid midsize truck so I can save on gas money by driving around town on battery power, yet still take long trips to remote places on internal combustion power.

Just think the government wants to get their fat hand in taxing electric metering like they tax the gasoline and diesel. Where will all that industry goes for refining fossil fuels. GM is being short sited and in my opinion it’s just a marketing ploy to get more green liberals to buy their vehicles. Nobody buys GM now so why would anyone buy a new design of theirs lol

Keeping water and electric separate isn’t the issue. Do you realize how much energy is needed to run their pump. Not to mention moving a vehicle that size and weight down the road.

You never know what the time between runs will be. Imagine being on a run and the truck shuts down due to low battery.

Sorry citizen you’ll have to die so we can be green.

there was an early, electric mass transit train system in LA that GM bought, dismantled, and destroyed so they could sell more cars in CA. It is sometimes talked about when the subject of public trans. comes up for So Cal. The traffic sucks here, but I would never give up my car. Really, I view much of this as an effort to control our lives by people who think they have to supervise the rest of us like children.
I’m with you on the sound aspect. Nothing makes me smile more than the sound of a high compression, carbureted engine, an in-line 4 sport bike, or an old 2 stroke dirt bike. I have a collection of 426 Hemi at startup vids. There is nothing like the sound of a pissed off Hemi Dart to brighten your day.

If you make it the government will tax it. To quote the Tim Hawkins song: Who can tax the sunrise
    Or the air we breath
Let you run a business and collect up all the fees
    The government can

That's because the people advocating this are detached from reality.

Facts no longer matter, everythings about virtue signaling now.

The thing is, people who have no knowledge of engineering, manufacturing, or even the use of these things often are the decision makers. Today, decisions about things are are made along ideological lines. They are essentially, wishes and not necessarily grounded in engineering, or reality. It’s paper-hat management. If I make a law, they will find a way to meet the expectation. If the expectation is never met, they will blame some factor other than reality.

Yeah, theres a lot of "politically correct" and "trendy" BS that drives all of the regulations and policies in this country. Its kind of aggravating really. I think there needs to be a lot more focus on using what we have efficiently, rather than just changing everything to electric. Like that doesn't totally make sense in the long term.
