Spidertrax Wheel Spacers 2009 Tacoma

How to add the Spidertrax 1.25 hub centric wheel spacers to a 2009 Tacoma. A few things you will need are a torque wrench and a decent socket set and you’re ready to go.
I added the spacers to the front two wheels the weekend before and did not take any pictures, but the front and rear are basically the same, so you will get the idea.




Put the truck on level ground, park it, put in 4H and apply the e-brake. Putting the truck in 4 wheel drive will engage the front drive train and give you some resistance when tightening the nuts (or removing) so the axel doesn’t rotate. This only applies to the front wheels, the e-brake will lock up the rear for you.

Grab the factory jack from the truck and the bag of attachments.

 

I put a few pieces of 2x4 under the jack so I didn’t need to crank the jack up quite as much. At this point you can start the install, but if you have jack stands, use them. I am a big fan of them as the engineering is simple, and there are very few points of failure. That being said, I did the front two wheels without the stands just using the factory jack.



Now that the truck is up on the stands I am ready to remove the rear wheels.


Since I live in New England, a breaker bar and PB Blaster are two essentials to any shop. The rear wheels had a small amount of rust that was holding them firm to the hub so I sprayed a bit where the back of the wheel meets the hub and let it sit for a half hour.

 

Popped the center cap off.

I used the breaker bar to free the lug nuts.

At this point all the nuts are off but the wheel is still attached, so a persuasion tool was in order.





After the wheel was off, I knocked off the heavy rust with a wire brush, there was not much.

 

A note about Loctite. You want to put the Loctite on the bolt were the nut seats, where its going to sit after its all the way torqued, as shown in the picture.




After you apply the Loctite to all the 6 bolts, slide the spacer on.

Then with the tapered end in, spin the nuts on. I used a small socket here just to spin the nuts on the lugs as there is not enough room for your fingers to get in there. I used the socket just to get the nuts spun, but did not make them tight. If you snug it with this ratchet, then move to the torque wrench, you will mess up the torque reading. I guess you could do this whole part with a torque wrench, but a small socket wrench is easier to start. Whichever you prefer.

 

Torque all six nuts in a star pattern to 75-80 foot lbs.


Once the spacer is installed and torqued to the correct amount, re-install your wheel and torque your lug nuts 80-85 foot lbs.

Pop the center cap back in.


You are done, for now at least. Spidertrax recommends checking the spacer bolts after 50 miles. This does not mean put a wrench on them and break them free and re-tighten. What this means is put a wrench on the bolt and put a few pounds of pressure toward the tight side, if nothing moves, they are fine. You don’t want to break the Loctite, you just want to confirm they are still snug.

 

What's the benefit of these with stock wheels and tires?

 

The final product. The truck is on stock rims and tires.

 

Wider more aggressive looking stance.

 

Eventually, I will be going with 285/75/16 on the stock rims and wanted to make sure I will clear the upper control arm. It looks wider and a bit more aggressive as Keith said.

Great pics! Have you noticed if it handles or drives differently? I really want these, but it seems half the people love em and the other half hate em...I don't want to buy 4, put them on and regret it... An 1.25 increase doesn't seem like a lot, do your tires look too skinny pushed out that far???

Thanks man. I have not noticed any changes in the way it handles, at all. The tires actually look a bit wider since I added these. Its not a night and day difference, but it does look like the truck sits better - more aggressive. So far I really like them and think it was worth the money. I read all the other posts about them, people loving/hating and it seems that the people that didn't like them, didn't actually have them. I have about 500 miles on them so far and no regrets.

 

Got mine put on today, dude I love them! They give it a great looking stance and now I have plenty of room between my tire and UCA. Thanks for the quick feedback!

There great I've had a set for about 3 1/2 years and 75,000 mi on them. Love them. I have them on the stock 17'in rims just for a wider stance and shit and giggles Also I check them about every 6 months just for piece of mind
