Here are the cast parts that I set up this morning. We run these two at a time as they make one part once bolted together. I will get some pics later of them done.

Reminds me of when I worked at a production shop mid 90s. We machined cast aluminum parts for a movie projector company called Ballentyne. I tell you the guys that wrote all the programs and toolmaker that came up with fixtures there were wizards.

I like a nap now and then myself. Sometimes with coffee the nap doesn't pan out real well.
I sure get burned out with winter weather. I've applied for a couple of jobs in TX and AZ but nothing has come through.
I know many states get worse weather than here in Nebraska but just seems like there be more time for the things I enjoy outdoors without below freezing temps and snow.
Then 7 months out of the year spend 8 hours a week mowing grass.
I count my blessings though with good job, and I'm not homeless.

Ahh, the ol' nut rounder. I have a set of sacrificial torx bits that I hammer in there that usually works. If not I get the portable stick welder out and weld a nut on there. NOT easy with a stick welder, let me tell ya!

    Holy shit!

Just like where I work, just when you think you've seen it all, something happens that makes you go WTF!?

That gives me Vietnam style flashbacks working on those things. What a nasty, dirty job. Cleaning out the slag pits was even worse. When the operator failed to scrape the pits below they liked to jam the metal scrapers when they finally did do it. I've beat the shit out of the scrapers several times...

I had already done the torx bit trick, those heads were so soft they still rounded. I also reallly didn't want to get a welder in here to try a nut trick. It's worth noting that plank of wood is the only thing covering the hole for the 15 foot drop to the waste chain. Not a ton of room in there. 2DA786D7-904F-4945-910B-FEA98A389E6D.jpg

A saw mill about an hour from here burned down a couple years ago from a welder doing repair work on a Sunday. They didn't reopen and recently had an auction selling off stuff.

Yeah, we have extensive training in what we call firewatch positions. The twin band saw (which is what that is a pic of) is on our list of "weld as last resort" places. There's so much sawdust and hydraulic oil everywhere that you're almost guaranteed to start one. And when I say extensive training, they hand you a garden hose and say "don't let it burn" basically.

Ah, I forgot sawmill = tons of wood dust and shavings. Yea that would light on fire quickly.

Speaking of lighting shit on fire, I think the worst was I was welding the J-bar back in between two conveyors and managed to light some dog food on fire (well, smoulder...). That was the most foul stuff ever.

You mean fire watch isn't watching the fire?

"Yea boss I was fire watch, I watched that f'er burn!"

That's always a concern for me when I go weld/torch on my cousins logging equipment, the oil and saw dust everywhere.

We do have hot work permits we fill out so we cover our asses. But we all call them burn permits, and boy does our boss not appreciate that.
