yeah well..thats where I think this is different. It's a city ordinance. Not a federal reg. It's a local thing which IMO is great, local gov should have the power and do their own things to suit the problems they are having. So I don't see it as a big issue. Moab is MASSIVELY over run with SXS's all the time especially for Rally at the Rocks. It was much more than just a few assholes there. It was a constant problem. Thus action was taken. I'm sure it won't be forever, but something will likely come out of it that will be a good compromise. Moab wants the revenue they bring in. But they don't want the constant hum and reving and other such things.

That doesn't happen near as much where say you are or even me. So it's not that big a problem so why regulate it to the same level.

Your argument is fair and it’s also part of the reason I won’t be going there (Moab) anytime soon. My concern is largely bore out of the fact that people who are fleeing excessive regulation are moving to where you and I live in droves. They’re fleeing excessive regulation except for those things they personally find distasteful. Freedom weeps and Atlas shrugs...

Moab is massively over run with all sorts of people, mountain biking, climbers, tourists off roaders, rafters ect. It's a hub for lots of different types of recreation. As much as I hate them, I think we need to be allies to SXS. Together we are stronger in keeping trails open to motorized use. I haven't popped into the thread to see what issues Moab is having but I'd guess the same could be said for offroaders. It sucks we get clumped in with the SXS but to the climbers and hikers we're all destroying the environment with our emissions and erosion.

I think when you buy a registration sticker you should have to take an educational test on how to act like a decent human. If you can't comply you lose your right to drive in town. This should really apply to dirt also. I think many SXS users are just ignorant to what they are doing.

Emissions and erosion aside, people are just becoming careless and wreckless in general. There's a lot more destruction and waste being left in public spaces, people knowingly entering protected and closed areas, and complete disregard for law. The hiking and climbing communities, to me, are some of the worst when it comes to stewardship because they have a self perception that they know everything alreasy. They are often the ones driving off trail to get to a cool camp spot or getting pee pants drunk in the middle of wilderness and having bonfires during drought. I like the class requirement idea, but what about enforcing an OHV registration for all vehicles, and not just side by sides, quads, dirt bikes, etc?

Took me a while to get caught up. It sounds like y’all need to start wheeling with a medic. ;)

Speaking of regulation, did y’all hear that nonsense about Wyoming proposing charging per mile driven on or off road in the state?

They're just banning them for use in town. I think that point is being missed by some in that other thread.

Put them on your trailer and use on them on the public lands how you otherwise would.

    probably couldn't hurt haha

yeah I saw that. Pretty nuts idea. Should just do an income tax and get it over with. the amount of money they'd make off of Teton county alone would make that worth it.

    Bingo.

They wouldn’t need to tax much. 1% in Teton county would repave all roads in the state.

Hahaha all the ones I drove to get up there were paved?

All of the airstrips we landed on were paved.

Not as much as dirt. My dad has a book and it's literally called "8000 miles of dirt roads in Wyoming" hahaha

Why can't they be used like a normal vehicle? They're basically the same just smaller. Force them to have horns and blinkers to drive on streets but if the same rules apply to them as automobiles I don't see an issue.

At that point lets force them to have quiet exhausts and emissions control devices

Agree with the noise. I doubt Moab has emission inspections though.

Noise mitigation makes sense / entirely agree. Is exhaust from side by sides actually a problem? (thinking big picture in numbers). Do side by sides really emit that much more than any other recreational vehicle or joshmo rollin coal in his cummins at every stop sign?

Probably not, my point is if its going to be treated like a regular road going vehicle it should have to adhere to all the same rules. This is splitting hairs but it might be a TIL for you, emissions are required in all 50 states by federal law and it's unlawful to tamper with them in any way regardless of state inspection requirements. That said, it's taken with a grain of salt haha.

Agreed on the emissions, but they drive the price up. And I'm all for anything that makes these things reflect the capability of damage they're capable of. Guys that build their rigs are more conscious of the capability and effect they have is my theory. SXS are too easy to just buy and play, complete idiots with no experience can go right out and hang where only enthusiasts could previously venture.

I think you hit the nail on the head in your last sentence. The side by side topic is/always will be a slippery slope for discussion. Comparing rec use in City of Moab is far different than use by hunters in the mtns of Wyo.... both of which annoy me.
