Confused after trip to wheel shop

At the wheel shop yesterday, I was looking at the moto metal 957's, and they are 4.5" backspacing (I think) and -12 offset, 17". I have the TRD sport package on my truck with the stock 17's and 265/65/17 duellers.

He said that unless I put a lift or leveling kit on the front, I'd rub with these wheels. He said the most I could go would be 0 or push to a -6. I'm not overly concerned with getting -12 over -6 or 0 as I an always do spacers later if I want to move the wheels out further.

The problem is some of the wheel models I like are only available in -12mm, so I'm wondering if the guy is right or wrong. He seemed pretty knowledgeable.

 

It could be the backspacing on the wheel that would make it rub. cut some plastics.

 

I've done a lot of searching on here, but most of the fitment threads have to do with lifted trucks. I don't mind the stock stance of my truck so I'm not sure I'm gonna get a leveling kit.

So maybe the best answer for me would be to go with a 0 or -6 offset and be done and done.

you will want wheels with between 4.5 and 5.5" backspacing in order to run 265's. If you want to run 285's, which you can do with your 3" lift, you will want 4.5" backspacing.

If the rims are 9" wide, a -12 mm offset, would be 4.5" backspacing.

 

Sorry for any confusion, I'm not lifted. Haven't even made my first payment on this baby yet. Just looking to upgrade some wheels to get started.

 

Thanks for the link oz-t. I did read that, and my question isn't about understanding offsets, it's about figuring out the offset that I need to run stock.

 

The reasuon he says you'll scrub is because its pushing your wheels out more so you will eventually be able to fit a larger tire with factory spindle and uca setup.. If you want those wheels you'll have to trim the air dam a little bit but that wont hurt you at all. with factory tire size though you shouldn't have any major problems!

No problem Oz-T, thanks for all the help guys! On that note, "puttin on the foil coach!" "Yeah, every game", "they brought their fVckuing toys with them!" I could go on for hours! I played hockey from age 6 through college, so I've seen slapshot about 100 times, and it never gets old. Talk about getting off topic.

Back on point, I just left the import car scene to get into the truck world. I had a heavily modded G35 coupe, so I know all about wheels and offsets. Although we dealt primarly with offsets so the backspacing threw me off a bit. Your post did help me understand exacly how backspacing and offset are related. What I'm getting at is on the same wheel width, say 8", a wheel with more negative offset will fit the wheel further out toward the fender and have less backspacing, while a more positive offset will keep it under the truck more, and have more backspacing. I got it now.

I'll probably try and find something a little less aggressive, either a 0 or -6 if I go with wheels before leveling.

One lesson I learned with the car is to mod right the first time. Don't go a cheaper route and then upgrade later. Just save your money up and do it right the first time. If I see a lift coming in the future, I'm not even going to mess with leveling. The stock "rake" on our trucks isn't as bad as a lot of other trucks out there, so I don't mind the aesthetics of leaving it be for now. Thanks for the help guys, I know newbs can be a pita.

 

Here's some shots of my old girl. Lot's of time, effort, blood, sweat and tears went into her. I did all work and mods myself, and she was a clean car. After the lip kit it was just too low to daily drive. I miss her at times, but every time I have to pull over a steep curb or speed bump, I get a sense of joy in my truck that nothing can stop me!

That truck is nasty. He's one of the guys with sohomotorsports. It's turbo'd. They had the dyno sheet on the truck, I can't remember what the numbers were, but it was over 300.
