K.A.M.P. Drawers - Kitchen And Mattress Platform

Thanks for the video it looks awesome. I’m definitely interested but have a couple questions.
1- How much of the drawer doesn’t come out? Like how far back do you have to reach to get the stuff in the very end of the drawer. I think that’s one of Decked’s problems. Can’t have the drawer roll all the way out but the Decked is hard to reach the stuff at the end.
2- The kitchen side is awesome. Looks like this is set up for 1 person. I wonder if I’d have enough space in just 1 drawer for clothes and other stuff for 2 people and a dog. For my purposes I’d give up the back half of the kitchen drawer for other stuff besides kitchen.
4- What’s the height of the platform? Is it just sitting on the bed rails and wheel well or is it elevated above that?
5- holy shit I can’t believe you got in a drawer I am way too claustrophobic for that shit.

Those are incredible. They look really well thought out with lots of useful functionality.

 

1- The last 10" of the drawer doesn't come out. On the kitchen side, I have the lift top wall/divider low enough to pretty easily get stuff in and out. I hadn't realized that was a problem that DECKED suffers from as well, but I'm glad we're on even playing ground here. This is the main downside to not using heavy duty full extension drawer slides, and the sacrifice for that $500 price difference. I'm still debating on going that route, as it would be much less labor to install it.
2- Personally, I'm not using any of this drawer space for clothes or other gear. It's all kitchen/food in one, and recovery/tools/shelter in the other. I'm keeping all my gear in the cab. I'll measure out actual volumes of the storage spaces for you when I get back home. You could probably make it work.
3- It is 9.75" high. The 3/4" top sits directly on top of the wheel wells, which are 9" from the top ribs of the bed. Much lower than DECKED.
4- A lifetime of being a tiny guy has made me comfortable with fitting into some pretty tight places. When I found out I was exactly the correct size to fit in that drawer, I had to crawl in!

Yes list space in rear is a problem for most designs. Including decked.

 

Wow, absolutely amazing work! I am building a canopy GFC style, once done with that, will start working on drawers/pull out kitchen. You brought to life exactly what I had in my mind. Great work. Any idea on weight of the whole structure?
Also, did you go with 1/2" or 3/4" plywood ?

Definitely check out the walkaround video if you haven't already. It's 1/2" on everything except for the top. It weighs around 200lb.

Are you taking orders for your setup? where are you located in Washington? How much? I would want the heavy-duty drawer sliders if your open to that?

 

Sub'd. Your setup is awesome! I'm looking at redoing mine soon and you definitely gave me a lot of good ideas. One question is where do you store your skis? Do they fit between the platform and the side or do they just end up going on top?

 

Really nice work. That last bit of drawer space might be a good place for water or fuel storage to act as both counterweight when open and have that weight forward when closed.

At this point, I'm still too stoked on adventuring to confine myself to my shop, and I have decided to take this summer to give it a thorough test with some offroad test time. I will be returning in the fall to build a number of improved versions for sale, delivery before 2022. Pricing will be based both on labor hours spent, and reasonable market value. Not taking orders at this time, but I'll post updates on here with how many I plan to build, pricing, etc. as soon as I figure that information out.

I'm in the Tri-Cities. If you can find 6ft heavy duty drawer slides, and are willing to pay the premium for them, I'd be more than happy to install them vs the skateboard bearing slides!

Skis just go right on top of the mattress, in a ski bag. I also haul firewood on a tarp on top of the mattress.

This is an amazing build, thanks for sharing! Planning to use this as a guide for building my own.

One question @sachou - you mentioned the 3/4" steel tubing for the drawer slides is overkill. Looking at the pictures with drawers inserted it's hard to see but doesn't seem like there is much clearance left to go smaller. Is it possible to take a photo showing this clearance, or can you tell us if 1/2" steel tubing would fit? Assuming you are using the 608-style skateboard bearings or are they a different model?

Edit: If you see this, also curious where you got those latches for $8.
