So if @SuperRAD's measurements are correct, it seems like bedrail caps MIGHT work. I think the 2nd gen bed cap is .75" tall and the KBVoodo ones are .125", so you'd get .625" back over the roof of a 2nd gen access cab. You'd have roughly 1.9-2" still to play with...interesting.

I wonder what the max bed/frame flex would be during off-road driving.

You have no idea. With the truck on stands right now and no rear 3rd and the pending install date. Man what I hope it all lines up.

Since it's a ford ranger prob what's pushing out the date a bit. I was in early September and just got the notice for the first 50%. A friend that put his on 2 months later also got it. The order is not just not date but also which ones are ready. the 3rd gens have been cranking out and look like we are about to see a gauntlet of 2nd gen trucks. Worth reaching out to Cindy and the team if they are still working on the ranger designs. My assumption is yes. Our date was pushed out due to 2nd gen redesign and 1st gen design for Tacomas.

2nd gen frame has a lot less flex than the 1st gens... I forgot to warn you about this, @frenchee - you may want to start planning for boxing in the frame.

Yeah I have mine, but I’m still getting antsy to get it set up and use it. Currently have a fresh kiddo that’s going to take up our time for now.

I have both Baja Designs dome lights for upstairs (1 red 1 white) in finally, only took about 8 weeks to deliver. I’m going to mount them on the 45° track upstairs. I picked these because of BD quality, and they also have an integrated switch which is yuge for wiring purposes. I just have to run power up there once which is really nice compared to other lighting I’ve done in my GFC and Flippac. Probably not running USB power up there, as the two front panels make putting cords up super easy.

Speaking of power, I’m dropping an AGM battery in soon and tuning ECU to boost the alternator to account for the extra voltage. Ordered a Power Tray so I can move my current Blue Sea fuse block off the OEM fuse cover and into a dedicated spot. Then I’ll re-run power back to the SP.

I’ve got my “window tray” back from production, it fits so perfect in the front passenger corner up against the window. It has a shelf on the backside, so I can mount and move around whatever I want, and the front part visible from inside the X1 is just flat. Still have to drill out some mounting holes for everything, but I’m putting another Blue Sea fuse block back there.

So, while I have my X1, I’m still getting antsy and I love seeing everyone getting stoked on theirs getting closer

Just looked around and looks like I might need to mess with it.
I just relocated my shocks using a total chaos fab kit and looks like the reinforcement plates I see weld to the outside of frame and would have to be adjusted to fit the mount I have on the outside now.

    1st gen Frame flexing issues

For those that have 1st gens - especially double cabs - you may want to reinforce your frames now - especially if you have or plan to put on a heavy steel bumper/swingout/rotopax/truck backpack/et al....

The best outer frame reinforcements I found (most length going down the bend to overlap where the inside of the frame boxing ends) are from Front Range OffRoad.
    https://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/tacoma-frame-plates/

After seeing how and where my frame flexed on my 2003 DCSB, I wouldn't recommend any shorter frame reinforcement pieces on the outside.

As for boxing kits, @TMFF has ONE set left for a 1st gen double cab. @frenchee let me know if you need help facilitating with Tim - I'm just down the road.

Hmmm, I don't disagree with reinforcement but my camper shell/tent will prob be = to SP.
This is on my radar though now. Why not box instead of a flat plate reinforcement on the frame? Also, the one you link is 1/8", seems thin. Thicker the better.

Going to guess that boxing is just more labor. Frame plate welded on outside is easier.

I noticed the same frame flex with just a Snugtop when I was in Death Valley on washboard. With the Drifter and the weight on the overhang, it gives more leverage to flex the frame even more. Not enough to slap the cab, but way more than I was comfortable with. Let me know how concrete highways in the Bay Area are on your drive back after the install. 45-60mph was unbearable in my 1st gen - felt like a bucking horse when it found the resonance frequency of the truck.

Anyway, I'll let this get back to SP chat.
