    Yes that is what I meant, I saw on a prior post someone mentioned that they didn't know if they needed sealant there or not. The post never got followed up on.

    @hx989 How did your make shift seal work out? Has it held up? My cover is seeping enough to make an annoying mess, but not enough to affect the oil level on the dipstick between oil changes. I was thinking about trying the external seal.

    That is cast in to provide rigidity and strength to the large area of cast aluminum.

    Not great, starting leaking again eventually but less so than before. Probably gonna do it over soon. For how easy it was it held up long enough

    A bit late to the game but I realized my '06 with 130K miles was losing oil and stumbled on this TSB issue. If I'm going through the trouble of disassembling the engine this far, are there things I should just replace (e.g., water pump, valve gaskets) while I'm at it? I'm also going to check valve clearances before the valve covers go back on.

    Wouldn't you like to know!
    Water pump, seals, & Thermostat wouldn't hurt. Shortly after those I had to do the radiator. @258K miles
