Thanks. I’m guessing it’s the extra piece which snaps on the end of that for the “lock” which is more closely guarded? At least that part is small so can be stored in a more accessible spot.

The water heater is right outside the bathroom, we just put a washcloth over the drain to catch the sediment.
I work the valve and my wife holds the powerfully squirting hose... ;);)

    Dodge?? :) J/K

Edit: Before I am flamed by the Dodge brotherhood, I had several Dodges -- never walked home, much... Had cold feet in most of them though.

Never a bad idea to drain all the sediment/mineral you can out of the bottom. How much you get depends on your water quality. I also seem to have less build up in the shower head since I started doing this monthly - no factual evidence on that, just seems like less.

With electrics it builds up until it touches the the bottom element - element runs too hot and burns out.

With gas it insulates bottom of the heater and the burner tube from the water - the burner fires longer to do the job - wasting energy and also the heater bottom and burner tube run hotter which reduces life.

True. I have been up since 4:30 and have had 3 or 4 cups to get me started. No jitters either.

No need to drain the water heater, just run the water out of the tank drain until it all the gunk is done flowing.

Leave the water supply on - the fill tube is designed to swirl the water around in the tank to help stir up anything sitting in there.

No need to shut off the power either, although you can if it makes you feel more comfortable - really you are opening a valve just like your sink, this one happens to be on the water heater.

NOTE: If you do need to actually drain a water heater make sure you do shut off the power, the elements will burn out without water.
