owners manual, 4x4 question?

Hi, I recently got my first taco and am very happy with it! but had a questions about the 4x4 system in. My last truck a GMC had electronic 4x4 and I knew I could put it in to 4hi at any speed under about 60. but how does it work with the lever in the Tacoma? do I have to be stopped? or can I do it at any speed?

I would of looked it up the the owners manual but I am the third owner and I don't have it so if anyone has a PDF of one for a 1996 SR5 I would appreciate it if you could post it.

You can shift into 4H only if you are under 50 mph. You can shift out of 4H to 2H at any speed as long as you keep up your speed or slightly speed up. If you want to go into 4L you have to be stooped and in neutral with your foot off the break and not moving.

It could sound like it is slamming out of 4H of 4L if you have not used the 4wd in a long time. Toyota recommends you drive in 4wd 10 miles every month so your 4wd drive-train stays lubed up.

EDIT: had to change speed to engage 4WD because if you have a leaver with no button you have to be going less than 50 mph to engage it.
If you have a button you can be going 62 and under to engage 4WD. That is the only difference.

 

I always stop and put it on N, then i'll switch it to HI4

 

The OP has a 1996... are you sure? If he has an ADD perhaps... If he has manual hubs, then maybe not.

Isn't there a web site that has all the old Tacoma manuals online to see?

 

^^ ya if you have hubs you have to be going 25mph or less to engage 4WD. Sorry.

You should be able to go onto toyotaowners.com and register a new account with your VIN and then download the PDF of the owners manual for your specific year.

Also, you can get a two day license for complete online access to all the service guides for $15. They're not in a format that makes for convenient downloading, but it's good to know if you're taking on a major (or minor) job and want the most complete info.

 

I have the owners manual, let me read it and ill let you know, btw mines a 95.5 so its the same .

I'm new to 4x4 trucks, I'm 16 and this is only my second vehicle what does manual hubs mean??

 

Manual versus automatic locking hubs. Manual hubs you have to get out of the truck, pop off the little hub caps, then switch the hubs to lock. Takes all of 5 seconds to do.

There's plenty to read up... I will be happy to give you some tips or info on the various parts of four wheeling... It is a great world!

HUBS:

In short, to save wear and tear on the front drive parts and get better gas mileage, while you are in 2WD you can 'free-up' the front drive parts. In 2WD your rear tires do the driving... in 4WD you add in the front tires.

To free up the front parts from rotating needlessly, locking 'hubs' are added (in the center of each front wheel at the end of the axle is a dial you rotate from lock to unlock free the front end up).

Because some folks didn't want to get out and manually lock their hubs, 'automatic hubs' were invented... they would lock at the same time as you put the truck into 4WD. However, to unlock them... you had to drive in reverse a bit.

A few years ago a newer system was invented called an ADD (Automatic locking Differential)... It still frees up most of the front drive parts and doesn't require backing up to dis-engage. This allows 'shift-on-the-fly' into and out of 4WD (high range).

So, if you have locking hubs, you will need to go out and turn BOTH of them to lock before going into 4WD, and should unlock them when you are done four wheeling.

If there is nothing on your front wheels to dial or rotate, then you probably have an ADD. Only the old WWII Jeeps seem to have non-locking hubs, so I doubt your truck is missing locking hubs or doesn't have an ADD.

Shifting procedures (Lever/button type with automatic transmission)

SHIFTING BETWEEN "H2" AND "H4"

To shift from "H2" to "H4", reduce your speed to less then 100 km/h (62MPH) and "4WD" button.

If the indicator light does not come on when you push in the "4WD" button, drive straight ahead while accelerating or decelerating.

If the indicator light flashes and the buzzer sounds when you push in the "4WD" button, reduce your speed or stop the vehicle and reset.

In extremely cold conditions, the transfer may not shift even if you push in the "4WD" button while driving. This is to protect the transfers. Stop the vehicle and try again.

No you can be going at any speed if you are to shift out of 4H.

 

What is the difference between shifting OUT of H4 or shifting into 2WD??? Isn't that the same thing?
