I agree, we're not just going to inbed 12 million phone chargers in the ground, technology has to be advanced and created to a specific purpose, but everyone with this "throw their hands in the air" attitude that things will never be better than what exists right now drives me crazy.

peoples arguments simply cant keep up with how fast the tech is evolving. seeing lots of 20yr old arguments up here. mine is probably out of date by the time finished typing this.

Using lighter materials could help reduce the need for such high levels of stored energy - reducing the overall size of passenger vehicles and separating them from supply chain methods of transportation for safety concerns.

Let's talk about that then. I really don't want to be throwing around decades old arguments, however, in most areas with 20+ year old infrastructure, those arguments still stand. Unfortunately, the 85% of the country that isn't CA or similar is still running bare minimums for power transmission. Not to mention the amount of difficulty, cost, and time to upgrade line transformers and associated controlling hardware/software. I'm not saying it's impossible, but there are certain critical components that aren't even made here in the US and they actually take a long time to make and ship in any appreciable amount.

We can leave battery tech completely out of the argument and there are still a ton of infrastructure issues that will need to be addressed before this is feasible. Let alone the inability of a lot people to afford one or two (most families have 2 vehicles) brand new electric vehicles when all this drops down to the public.

Again, it's not insurmountable, just more complicated than "20 year old arguments."

That's definitely going to be required. Here's to hoping materials science can pick that one up and run with it.

Greed is one of the factors of slow growth in America. Companies have the ability to crete but if it's not profitable they won't bother.

Yeah, I feel like we used to take pride in innovating and engineering solutions, creating new and better technologies. Now we are entirely enslaved to bottom line and corporate profit percentages and pride in accomplishment gets thrown out the window. For example we're at the mercy of the Elon Musks of the world to get to space when we used to go "F it, we're going to the moon, let's figure it out"

Necessity is the mother of invention. Boredom is the Stepdad.

To be fair, Elon is the "We're going to Mars. Let's figure it out" guy.

    To the moon.

Contextually we "needed" to go to the moon. We may make it to Mars, but that "need" has to be real. In the near future Musk would need mentally unstable guinea pigs for populating Mars. Anyway America go Volt in one garage and Prius in the other and see which gets filled first.

Smart meters only became a thing because power generation infrastructure did not keep up with the clearly visible signs of future need.

Electricity providers spent like a sailor on liberty in Thailand rather than reinvesting in upgrading the system.

So here we are can’t change the past so let’s figure out the future. We can start by reducing punitive taxes on energy. Mandated that those savings be reinvested in what we have and increase supply to meet future requirements.

Let’s take a trip down history lane...
(without diving into the wrongs we did to first people)
We can look at at the subsidies we gave the rail roads so they could cross the continent, the new deal which created the interstate, the subsidies for electrical grids to get set up in states and municipalities and most recently the subsidies for cable and fiber optic to be sent across the continent and even into municipalities. These grants make possible the vast work that creates progress. Heavy lifts are often made possible with the help of federal grants.

American Universities are creating new battery technology which is lighter, charges quicker, lasts longer and is safer. (Federal grants help pay for this)

Perhaps (?) Now it’s time for the market based approach for vehicle manufacturers to be part of the infrastructure heavy lifting like service stations that change batteries if you go beyond your vehicles battery range.

Edit: Tesla already has charging stations (for example)

Solid State batteries are here. Just being perfected for use in EV's

Swap stations have been around, gaining traction in China.

If the General Motors factories run ANYTHING like the UAW shithole I work for they don't even have a clue what they're doing next week, much less in 2035

In today's corporate world, an ambitious goal is greater than how well you do things day to day

I think GM filing for bankruptcy again before 2035 is more likely than them going all electric. They will be carbon neutral by 2040 cause they will no longer be in business.

They claim that they have made progress on their design. I'm not sure they are ready to debut the tech any time soon. However, that is promising.

My most recent understanding of their SSB is that they are using 1 ampere cells in a matrix. This isn't ideal, but they'll definitely streamline their design and hopefully produce something usable.
