First when buying it head gasket was just done. Then oil pump went out lost lower end. Lower end rebuilt. Ran great, then head gasket went out, then put a different head on it. Now where here

It’s my dads truck who gave it to me.

Hmm.. running the risk of fixing a potential basket case... I would be looking into a used motor honestly. All things point to a botched rebuild I’m afraid

@Allex95 i would take @Empty_Lord advice... he's kinda an expert and I've seen him take on some gnarly rebuild projects.

Having just rebuilt my own 2.7 motor I would look into a JDM motor. Low miles and running when pulled, not sure where you're at but there's a dealer up here in the PNW that freights em in direct from Japan.

You can get one for 1800 and I spent 2200 on a complete rebuild myself where I did all the labor but the machine work

LKQ is who We get motors from at the dealer. Local junkyards usually can help too

JDM is an option. I have not bought one before so I don’t know much about them

So a jdm what do I have to do when I swap over if I do to a jdm? Is a jdm motor factory?

Now that I mention that option I see you are a 96, all the JDM motors I've seen are coil on plug only :( so you'd have some harness rework to do to make it work :/

Regretfully you're in a really shitty spot having a dizzy to deal with

From my understanding just swap all your external engine parts over. The long block will be the same

I didn’t even notice that... does indeed make it more of a pain. I’m not sure if the non dizzy trucks have the cam cut for the dizzy

From personal experience the heads have a recess but it's not bored out. Im positive of this because when I rebuilt my motor I bought an aftermarket chinesium head from APRauto (well reviewed company out of CO) and when I specified i had an 8 port intake they sent me one with the gaping hole for the distributor to volt to.

Because of how long it took me to rebuild the motor I was outside of returning it so I had to make it work. Anyone in the future reading you CAN get away with getting a 52mm (not positive on size cause it's been 2 years) freeze plug and permatexing it in the hole that the dizzy bolts to if you have a twin coil pack 3rz

I'd jump on that if you want to go that route. They don't come up often

What’s the chance a jdm motor is bad?

You don’t use any of that. All the Tacoma accessories would go back on. The engine itself though will
    Be the same

Should. As long as the head is the same which with a dizzy it should be, everything else will be bolted on from your Tacoma

I've read alot of forums and done alot of research and I've read only 1 instance where the motor was "bad" and I'm fairly certain it was an operators install issue, not an actual motor issue.

The benefit of JDM motors is that Japan has a law where 50k miles is the max before they get put under stricter emissions. Sure a Japanese person can keep a vehicle going but it's easier for them to sell it and buy new. Which means all those surplus vehicles get stripped for parts and sold, hence why we have an import market for them.

Personally I would've bought a JDM but I could only find the coil on plug version or very rarely the distributor version. In 8 months of searching I never stumbled across my exact motor
