This was in 1981....and he was probably close to 60 then. So you can well imagine how old school he was.

No push sticks back in my day. Hell, I'm not so sure we even wore safety glasses back then

I don't think we wore safety glasses in carpentry class either, early 90's here.

I had an auto ship teacher who knew everything from the Model T, which he owned acouple of them. Right up to the latest new cars at the time and all their electronics. He was a natural.
He could get you any part that you needed. Even ones that parts stores told you that you couldn't. Believe me l know. He'd spend 2 days rebuilding a carburetor, but it would be absolutely perfect when he was done.

    His name was Mr Weale

The only thing Mr. Gannon wouldn't let us use was the wood lathe, his friend lost an arm in one.

I remember carving my initials in a wood frame we made, being as I was the first to do it I got a butt chewing like I've never had, never been cussed so much in my life. By the end of that school year everyone in class had their initials carved in it

Ah shop class, took it my freshman year. Teacher was definitely old school. Glad I took it the beginning semester as he had a heart attack IIRC the second semester and was pretty much forced to retire. His replacement didn't do half the cool shit the older guy did. That was back in 04/05 and at this point I doubt they even have that program anymore. So many memories coming back think about high school

I took carpentry and agriculture all 4 years of high school, when I graduated in 1993 that was the end of all the shop classes. We loaded all the lumber we had on the school truck and the shop teacher took it to his house :D

One cool thing about my agriculture teacher, when he got out of college and started teaching, he had my dad in his class the 1st year. The year he retired, he had me in his class.

We had an employee at a sister company lose a finger last year because he was WEARING GOD DAMNED LOOSE GLOVES while milling something on a lathe. So what did our company do? Got rid of all the lathes, of course! Nerf all of the sharp edges in this world for the dumbest person. That's lathe 101, don't wear crap that can suck you in. And in my case, pull your hair back out of the way so it doesn't scalp you.. because it sure as shit will. Odd lathes came up, I've been oogling at them. I miss having one for making my pens.
