    Hey taco luuuuvers,
A while ago I put a K&N air filter in my 1gr and it is a 6spd. They are supposed to give you better gas mileage right.....the filters? My mileage is getting worse and I have no lift.........STOCK! I also recently saw a video about how the charcoal canister can get screwed up if you overfill(up to the very top I do sometimes). The guy in the video(a former Toyota technician) said the overfilling can soak the charcoals and damage them. I have not changed the spark plugs yet or the coil packs, but the power is great. I live in SD and the roads are fairly flat. My miles are 116k now, but once again, no loss in power. I have done seafoam(gray bottle high mileage formula) and cataclean and just the other day I put in it everlast fuel treatment(the boat people) I liked it best. I got it @ Walmart. My gas is either no ethanol, or 10% ethanol it varies. I have 60 psi in my tires and there is no pulling or vibration......VERY SOLID TRUCK! I took my wheels off a couple of months ago when this started to check for dragging brakes and they all turned, no squeaks. So is it my canister? I know change my spark plugs........I will soon.........time my friends........TIIIIIME! How do you check to see if the maf sensor is dirty or failed? I have cleaned that too a couple times.
    Thanks,
    Pastor Brian

It's the winter gas; All gas contains at least 10% ethanol these days and it does not return good MPGs in the winter...

If you just put in a K&N filter and it got worse, I would clean the MAF sensor...probably dirty, and oily. Then get an OEM filter.

If you read the literature carefully the K&N filters offer no improvement in performance until you're running at 5000-6000 rpm. In other words you'll see a very slight difference in a race car, but not in a common vehicle. Plus they don't do as good at filtering the air that gets into the engine. The only advantage is that long tern they can be cleaned and reused instead of buying a new filter.

Running 60 PSI in the tires on a Tacoma is insane. Your truck weighs 3500 ish lbs. The wheels on light duty trucks aren't even designed to stay together at that PSI. Guys driving 7000 lb 3/4 ton trucks only run 50-60 PSI unloaded. They only add more air when they are loaded closer to the 10,000 lb GVWR. Even if you're using E rated tires 30-35 PSI is plenty and won't hurt your fuel mileage.

I read on the internet about how bad winter gas and 10% Ethanol is, but if there is any difference in fuel mileage I'd have to use more than 1 digit to the right of the decimal point when calculating fuel mileage in any vehicle I've ever owned. The biggest difference I see in winter is that folks let their vehicles idle longer warming up before driving off.

Some real numbers would help. What is your MPG? You may have unrealistic expectations and the fuel mileage is normal.

What is the gas mileage you are getting? Highway and city?
How long since the last spark plug change?
Clean both the MAF and throttle body. Your MAF hasn’t failed. Just spray it well with MAF cleaner and clean the throttle body. If your plugs are over due for replacement that will affect your mpg. But really need to know what your mpg is. We may not think it is that bad.
Winter gas blend will definitely affect mpg.

My psi is probably not 60......more like 50. If I drop them below 40 the tire light comes on. They are a 10 ply, but it doesn't ride bad. I got a new frame on a recall and my springs and rear shocks are brand new(6-7 months). Winter gas......I ask one of my farmers here if they thought there was a winter mix gas now and they said no and this guy has a big huge farm production with a scale and so on. I should clarify though, I saw this before winter too, but the K&N(and this isn't the first time I used them) took off some of the backpressure, let in more air, and made my clutch release a tad smoother. I have lots of sticks in my day and used many K&N's. But it surprised me. It is just a drop in the box filter, no CAI.....Maybe one later.......probably snorkel.
    Thanks, boys.......Pastor Brian

Sounds to me like a basic 100 kmile maintenance is due.

The Owner's Manual will have the procedure to reset the TPMS limit. 40 psi is a bit high. IIRC, the tire pressure on the Driver's door placard states 29 psi.

The truck is already equipped with a CAI. The K&N filter has lower air restriction because it allows larger dirt particles to pass through. Think of it as a coarser screen for the air, while the paper is a fine screen. There is no "performance" advantage for a daily driver vehicle. The advantage is you can get an air filter that is cleanable instead of disposable.

Clean your MAF and TB. I was getting around 12mpg-13mpg until I cleaned my MAF and TB. I'm back up to 15 mpg.

    It's a secret
So OP-Brian, my $0.02 on your thread-post...ready? Based on your thread subject then your actual initial thread post and answering/commenting your inquiries within the paragraph...1) No, the K&N air filter is not supposed to give you better fuel mileage...2) Charcoal canister-irrelevant...3) DIY Chemical treatment things don't do anything more than whatever detergent formulas current various gasoline brands already add to their fuel...4) Inflating your tires to the max PSI rating on tires is not necessarily the best pressure and you will likely get premature tire-wear along the center-most area of your tire tread and decreased optimal traction...5)...too many run-on subjects...lost interest...probably will still comment...maybe...I think....what about "TIIIIIME"?...yes, time will never stop...

Not a Taco, but my Dodge ram dropped from appx. 12mpg. to 8 mpg. ( I check it on paper ever fill up & keep records) No difference in starting, running, & saw no black smoke. Turned out to be a Oxygen sensor. Replaced it & all back to normal 12 mpg..... And yes we do have 100% gas, no ethanol, I buy it regularly & My boat has never had any ethanol.

Git rid of that damn K&N, they are garbage at filtering and the oil contaminates the MAF sensor. The air filter will have no effect on the smoothness of the clutch, that's all in your head.

Q1: What is your current mileage?
Q2: what was your old mileage?

    1. What LT tire are you running to warrant 60psi?

    2. Over-oiled k&n causing MAF/sensor issues. Not surprising.

    3. useless engine treatments....

Just apply Occam’s razor and you’ll get “added unsprung weight in LT tires or grossly overinflated p’s, and your MAF is dirty due to k&n oiled filter.”
