This is such a neat mod. Thanks for doing all the R&D and hard work @daveeasa and @Puppypunter .
Many years ago, when I got my truck new, I had replaced those licence plate lights with bright AM LEDs, and quickly realized how it made my reverse camera's useless.
So I switched to extremely low power ultra violet/violet colored LEDs to address this problem for the past 4 years.

Colored license plate lights are illegal in many states. Might want to check your laws prior to installing.

    Wisconsin statute:

No person shall operate on a highway during hours of darkness any motor vehicle upon the rear of which a registration plate is required to be displayed unless such motor vehicle is equipped with a lamp so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. Such lamp may be incorporated as part of a tail lamp or may be a separate lamp.

I got the harness installed. Piece of cake once I remembered and located my unused reverse light connector.

The kit is spot on and perfect. The included nut and washer was a real nice touch. Some ex-vendors around here could take away several lessons from @Puppypunter and @daveeasa .

    Cough, cough . . . KTJO 4X4!

Sorry. The garage door light wasn't turning off. I'll get better Afters.

    A significant difference there.

Yeah, the neighbor parks like an asshole on the sidewall.

I think part of what makes this mod fun is how easy the install is. It’s about as complicated as the AC drain line mod, a good ratio of time spent to satisfaction gained and super low risk because it’s really not possible to make a mistake other than maybe dropping a taillight?

Some photos of my attempt to get organized on parts stockpiling.

With the TotalTails, that's not even an issue since you don't even have to disconnect the light.

You're right though. Ease plays along with satisfaction. PnP for real.

Thanks for telling me. I've been having those on my license plates for the last 4 years here in California, and no officer has pulled me over yet.
I don't know the law on this, i haven't looked.
They way I see it, if an officer wants to pull you over, they really don't need a reason. If there' isn't one, they'll make one.

Curious to see how this will work with the Baja Hitch reverse light.

As far as compatibility, no problem what so ever! As far as functionality, without the glare on the camera, you should hopefully be able to see peoples retinas actually melt in real time from the brightness of the light, so that should be cool....

And just another note, these will work with the harness that @memario1214 will be offering as well if you really want to daisy chain them.

Built a test harness tonight so I can bench test each real harness.

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
Seemingly minor violations of the motor vehicle code accumulate.

Back in my more youthful days, I was in a wintertime accident. Wasn't my fault, but I couldn't blame the guy that hit me either. Truly bad driving conditions. Went to the local PD to fill out the accident report. It started with "Did you know that your driver's license has expired?" and quickly went downhill from there. By the time we were done, the officer was almost literally banging his head on the table saying "I want to let you go, but you're really not making this easy for me." Felt kinda' sorry for him. LOL

Best not to let those little things pile up, IMHO.

Technically, this mod is likely illegal itself. I’m assuming nobody will ever get caught for it though. And it’s super easy to temporarily undo by disconnecting the license plate intercept T.

You're absolutely right, and it's good that you mention it. I think this is one of those cases where the spirit, if not the letter, of the law is being observed. Your license plate is still being illuminated at night by a white light (except for a very brief time when you're backing up). If pressed, one could even argue that this mod enhances safe driving by making the image from the backup camera more clear.

Will the license plate lights turn off if you activate an anytime backup camera switch?
