im hoping to grab some inserts to protect my rim mostly. a ton of rock gardens around and the last one i blasted through dinged my rim just enough to leak air. me being the idiot i am tried to rally down the fire road on a flat and popped the bead off (i saw that skills with phil video where he ran a flat down a line in whistler).

i dont think a double down casing would help in that case? i thought a dd was more protection from side wall slashes?

So you're running DD on your trail or enduro rig?

I ran DDs and prefer the insert. Its the better handling of the CC that really sold me. Protection is nice, not dinging wheels is nice, but the dual-stage damping was a game changer for me.

Close, but no cigar! That was Six Mile ;) But yea, I hit Allaire a few times a year. It's about 45 minutes for me to get there so I usually opt for Six Mile, LewMo or Hartshorne, which are all about a 30 min drive for me.

I haven't run DD casings, but I have friends that have. To me the biggest thing is rim protection. With a DD casing, you can still damage your rim. Sure the sidewall support will be better, and less likely to puncture & all that, but your rim is still vulnerable.
& like what @mrtonyd said. You can still ride down a trail with just the insert and no air.

I don't carry a spare tire anymore. Just a couple bacon strips & CO2 in case I need to plug it. Haven't had a flat once since having my cush core's (other than when I blew up the rim lol).

What's the weight difference between a DD casing vs a cush core insert? Too lazy to look it up. I can't imagine it'd be that different. From what I remember, those DD tires are pretty burly and heavy.

Smashing the side of your rim against a rock is going to crush your rim, insert or not. So if neither protect from bad lines but both protect from flats then I will take the simpler of the two

DD has two layers, all around the carcass of the tires. The stiffer casing does protect against rim strikes, since it's stiffer and deflects differently. It's not going to be as good as CC at protecting against a low-pressure smash into a pointy rock, but it does offer significant increase in protection compared to single ply.

Enduro= Front and rear DD. Trail bike = Front EXO+, rear DD.
I never felt much difference TBH. I even ran the Procores, which has a tunable double chamber design. That did make a difference, and was my preferred system. But the DD was a simpler way to avoid flats and change the feel of the tires to the point where I like it.

It's good to have options. I'm glad I've tried them, and found what works for me. Riding style, weight, and location is a huge consideration as well. CC would be sweet in bike parks, where you're loading the hell out of the tire, and having that sidewall stability would be great. DD is a necessity in a lot of the fun CO trails, where shark teeth and pointy rocks slash sidewalls regardless (even DDs aren't always immune).

I had to look up more info on my casings because I get lost in the numbers. My tires apparently fall between EXO+ and DD, but I'm not in a hurry to take out the cushcores yet.

    Taken from enduro-mtb

    Gravity Shield
The name says it all: Gravity Shield tires are made for those who follow the call of gravity and like to go as fast as possible on the descents. Michelin combine a three-ply 60 TPI casing with another three-ply 33 TPI casing for added reinforcement. The thick threads of the lower TPI casing do push up the weight of the tire, but they offer enough support for you to run lower tire pressures without having to worry about them squirming when you corner. You’ll rarely have to deal with cut sidewalls on rocky trails either. Pinch flat protection with Gravity Shield tires is better than Kenda’s EMC casing, but not quite as good as MAXXIS’ DoubleDown or Schwalbe’s Super Gravity casing, though they are a bit lighter.

Yeah, I should mention I don't run DD, but I do run EXO+ with silk shield in the sidewall.

Great day on the trails. I used the Decoy to find the trails, the Wrecker to rip em.

I might have the smallest amount of interest. Would obviously depend on sizing price etc. Post up some pics and specs because I'm sure there are more than just myself who have interest.

backpedalling is always a funky proposition. Potentially bent hanger or der. OR your b-tension is not set correctly. I notice it on one of my bikes sometimes when i'm in first gear and I back pedal. it jumps into 2 or 3 reallll quick. forward pedal always fixes it though.

Does pedalling normally make it all work and go back to 11th?

Hope you guys like riding in the cold!
The "polar vortex" that article talks about makes me personally excited because I am not ready for phoenix summer yet. Today my phone told me the feels like temperature during my ride was 93 degrees. If it was April I'd be fine with that, but in February? All I know is I will be putting in a lot of miles next week because mid day temps should be right around 55-60 for me.
