Realistically the margin between MSRP and invoice is less than 5% in most cases, and big incentives aren’t something you find on Toyota. You can try to get into the dealer holdback, but when the trucks are flying off the lots they have no incentive to deal.

My buddy is buying a new GMC 2500 to tow his new 32’ offshore fishing boat. Normally on a domestic you can find significant incentives, right now the best deal is 6.2% off MSRP (invoice minus incentives) with a 22+ week wait on ordered trucks. When the economy takes a shit we’ll be back to incentives, but as long as dealers are selling every truck they can lay their hands on before they hit the lot the deals aren’t there.

I didn't buy a basic truck I certainly wanted LED lights and a couple other things here and there. What I found interesting was that the dealer whom I called last (the dealer I eventually bought my truck from) was very nice and one of the top 3 salesman of the dealership, when I asked why he gave me such a good price he simply stated he wanted to corner me in the market with a good deal so I wouldn't waste my time looking elsewhere. I'm not saying I didn't negotiate a bit with him, rather I simply stated I am buying a vehicle give me a good price and it will be the easiest sale you make today.

I have walked out of dealerships when buying other cars only to have the dealer call me back a few hours later because now they are willing to accept my offer. Point is I know what I want to pay for a vehicle and a sale or a large purchase is all about a state of mind, I felt like I got a good deal and the dealer made money it was a win win for everyone involved.

Yeah but assuming you financed the '17, the stealer has got you for X more years on the noose. In other words you may have lost X number of years of freedom :spending:

I can’t speak to the Toyota version. But it works great in my girls Kia Soul.

Wouldn't own another vehicle without it. I agree the Toyota is a little sensitive, but I'll take the annoyances to have it. Also, you know the settings don't have anything to do with sensitivity, right? The only settings you can adjust is the following distance, the sensitivity is the same if you're on the closest or the furthest setting.

Hold the cruise control on button in a little longer. It will go from adaptive cruise to regular cruise. Then the truck won't brake when somebody pulls into the lane in front of you and you can just go around them at the set speed. I can't stand it either.

I agree, I don’t want another vehicle without radar cruise and automatic high beams. The radar cruise in my Ford was better, and would bring me to a complete stop in traffic. I almost wrecked the Taco the first week because I was expecting it to slow me down with traffic entering a rotary, it shut off the cruise at 25 mph and then was dinging and showing me the BRAKE warning as I approached the vehicle ahead.

Yep, when I had my Raptor I could use the adaptive cruise in stop and go traffic and it would bring me to a stop and get me going again as long as I wasn't stopped for too long. When we were looking at Porsches for my wife, the sales guy said the adaptive cruise was used a lot by people in busy areas, like LA, due to the stop and go. I'm glad the Toyotas have it, but they have a lot of improving they could do.

I went in to the dealership for a recall and they offered to buy my truck. It's a 2016 SR5 2WD, but they offered me 18k for it. No damage, 40k miles. I got excited thinking about trading in for a cement off road, but 18k for my truck seemed like a rip-off. I'm no expert on car prices but I walked away. Maybe in a few years

I don't know. A 5 year old 2wd base model...I don't see that commanding a premium. Dealers also aren't offering more than book value unless you're buying from them and basically getting screwed on that deal. Dealers aren't charities and will only do deals that make them money in the end. I got some offers on my truck I recently sold and was offered between $28K-$34K from dealers. It took me less than a week and I had multiple private party offers for my full asking price ($39K).

If you have another vehicle to drive, your best move, right now is to sell your intended trade vehicle and hold the cash. New inventory is low and trade values are high. The computer chip shortage is not helping either. Economic factors tend to run in cycles and the worm will turn, eventually and when the dealers are ready to make deals, you'll have the cash in hand.

The downside to that is you give up the sales tax benefit most states give, where you only pay sales tax on the difference. I know Illinois did away with that, but it is a terribly run state.

You'll more than make up for that with the extra you'll get on a private party sale. That's a sales gimmick dealers convince you of so you'll let your trade in go for less than you could get in a private party sale.

+1 On this, especially in areas where the tax rate is high, for example in my parish which is 10.5%.

    Example: a 40K vehicle + 4.2K tax = 44.2K OTD

Scenario 1: sell vehicle by private party = 35K cash + 9.2K out of pocket

Scenario 2: trade in= 32K* = 8.84K out of pocket (8K trade in difference + 840 tax assessed on diffrence)

*The advantage of scenario #2 will obviously depend on trade in value. It is best to work out your trade in value and then compare the numbers for decision making. YMMV.

Only thing I’d trade/sell my Tacoma for is a new bronco. But never a first year of the new model. Give it a few let them work out issues and demand drop.

I wish Toyota would get their asses on TW and listen to what loyal customers have to say and want. Things to improve on or things we would like to see.

Toyota’s have never done me wrong. I’ve purchased 4.

All dealerships know the tax benefit game and most low-ball trade offers an equivalent amount because they know most people don't want to deal with a private sale. Private sale is an option but is not free from hassles. Dealing with tire-kickers, low-ballers and the "can you take payments" folks can drive you nuts. My experience with private sales is you have to price the deal attractively to get action and then you're pretty close to trade dollars. I'm sure some here will chime-in with unicorn tales of people coming with stacks of cash and paying over retail for their private sale vehicle....but I've sold a few cars in my day and it's no picnic.
