What is this for in the center console lid?

I very carefully went through the entire 2017 owner's manual and there is no mention of the use of that clip. One drawing shows it, but with no explanation. The drawing doesn't show anything in / on the clip.

(I have a 2021 and it still has that mystery clip on the console lid. The way that's configured, it has to be for something very specific. I'm burning with curiosity.)

I managed to jam a pen into mine but like the guy in the video, it doesn't perfectly fit, but it seems to be staying put. I'm sure when the day comes that I need a pen, I won't be able to find it...

 

My truck came with a dealership pen there.

 

It's because the off road doesn't have a skewp. Those with the skewp have to change out the pens frequently because they are out of ink.

My '06 doesn't have one of those. But it does have the scoop power adder.

 

Mystery solved! The same exact bracket is on the underside of the Tundra console lid. Although the Tacoma user's manual doesn't mention it, the Tundra user's manual does, and it's spelled out as being a pen holder. But not just any pen will fit. It has to be a pen with a barrel diameter close to .325". Anything more or less and it will either slip out or not go in at all (or, if forced, will risk breaking the bracket).

The idea of a tailgate key fitting there is hogwash.

 

Is there an off chance that console lid would fit an '06?

I've got a pen that rattles around in the console cubbies. Always in the way or not found.
