Just make sure you get some good DOM tube. I've been known to look at cast iron pipe for 4 minutes longer than legally allowed for a welder...ahahahahahahaha. You would be creating a "Y" with the tube on each side of the hitch receiver.

So the Y, where are the points of the Y going, back to the bumper or to the frame?

I was out poking at it and it would be really simple to put a piece of tube through the forward end of the receiver and then bolt it to the bottom of the frame at the back. That would nicely counteract any kind of upward rotation caused by pressing down on the hitch.

Back in the seventies building pulling Trucks before receiver hitches became common .

attaching to the frame several feet from the back of the truck was common.

Unless your going really wild with what your planning to drag around you should be fine.

If need be you could go with a bolt on receiver hitch unless you really need the extra couple inches of clearance .

Yes, like the top drawing. I'd get them going to the front at a angle. I guess you could also go over to the frame at 90* but I'm a angle kind of fabricator. LOL

Haha! . Plenty of triangulation! Trusses are amazing, although although bmost mine have been spaghetti or wood.

Power question: I'm eventually going to put a sub panel in my new places garage, but in the meantime I have been eyeing up the 220 generator plug outside my garage. Can I run a welder off that? I assume I flip the breakers on and I'm good to go right?

 

So you're asking about the receptacle to plug in a generator to your transfer switch?

If the transfer switch is wired properly, there's no way to connect mains power to that input receptacle. Not without rewiring the transfer switch in such a way that you then risk disaster if you should ever use it with a generator during a power outage.

This also goes back to my general advice regarding things electrical - if you have to ask, you probably ought to hire a professional.

Nothing wrong with asking and learning.

To expand on generator transfer switches - the point of them is to safely isolate the generator from the grid. Two main reasons are (a) don't want you generator's power backfeeding the grid and potentially injuring/killing power line workers, and (b) when power is restored and the grid & generator are both on, generator tends to go kaboom.

With the transfer switch, the designated circuits in the household can easily be switched between grid and generator, often with an "off" in between. This is why you wouldn't be able to get any power for your welder from the spot you plug the generator into.

 

Lamens terms it's an IN not an OUT.

Project garage cleanup starts with a mess, well I guess it really starts with moving around shit and getting things gone.

 

Should I plate these corners before welding on the wheels? The tube wall is 0.065" and the wheel mounting plate is 0.125". This isn't gonna be a heavy duty hammering on workbench, mainly a tablesaw cart.

 

I’d plate then drill and tap the corners to make life easier if/when you replace the casters.

But that’s me. Usually overthinking, overengineering, and overcomplicating stuff.

 

I'd tap that.

Are they nice castors ? I’d do two little 1/2 inch welds making it easy to cut off for future replacement if they are nice

if they are cheap ones then I’d put a corner plate in and drill holes for nuts/bolts for when they break

 

They are off Amazon, so no? They're a nice orange though lol. I wasn't thinking ease of replacement, cutting some welds isn't that big of a deal. For the amount of weight this will hold unless they're extra crap wheels then I shouldn't need to change them.
