I have a 98 Tacoma and love it but “want” a new OR LB but damn 40k is insane in my opinion.

I’ll agree, that is a lot of money for a mid-size truck.

yeah it’s insane. I guess I’ll drive my 98 into the ground then spend 3k and put a new motor in it.

If I can get this one for 28-29 I’ll get it. It’s got 73k miles on it. It looks nice.

Your first post said you “want” a new(er) Tacoma.
If this is the case, my advice is don’t buy one.

I’d like to have a full size truck with more power and room.
I tow quite a bit more now than when I first bought my truck.

However, my truck does the job. So I’ll keep it until I “need” a new truck.

In 1985 I bought a brand new F150 for $10,500, a higher end truck with a V8 and automatic was closer to $15,000. Other than 4X4 and AC it was as basic as it gets. Regular cab, rubber floor mats, vinyl seats, 5 speed, 6 cyl engine. The median income in the USA in 1985 was about $22K/year. In 2020 median income was $68K. People are making 3X as much money as they did in 1985. It would be normal to see prices being 3X as much for a truck.

And we're not comparing apples to apples, my $10.5K truck was as basic as it comes. You're looking at one of the high end trucks. Toyota doesn't make a regular cab anymore. You can still find a basic 4 cyl 4X4 Tacoma Access cab for under $30K. It wasn't that long ago that getting 150,000 miles before rebuilding an engine was an accomplishment, and getting 200,000 was unheard of. Today 400,000 miles isn't a big deal. GPS, traction control, locking diff's, satellite radio, and all of the other electronic devices on new trucks didn't exist in 1985.

When you factor in for the differences in income and the much better quality of new trucks you're getting a lot more truck for $40K today, and working less time to pay for it than you would have 35 years ago.

Had a 1992 for 14 years. Had to sell for the kids arriving. Used a Pathfinder for 14 more. Wanted to finally get back into a newer Toyota DCLB 4X4. F*ck me! In Canada where I'm looking, prices for used ones were insane for high mileage 1st & 2nd gen with slim selection. OK, a good used 3rd gen then. Slim pickings and prices were nearly that of new with 50k-80k KM's.

:spending:F*ck it, settled on a new one but had to settle for 3rd color choice as selection was slim but secured 1.9% for 72 months to make it a little more affordable as with a base TRD Sport 4X4 prices with all taxes, dealer installed options it was over 50K Cdn. My old 1992 V6 5spd 4X4 extra-cab was $19,500 Cdn including a chrome bumper. Increase of about 30K Cdn in 29 years.

Glad I made the move as prices continue to inch up with new & used (bit of a bubble tho). Very happy with the truck and hope to pay it off early and enjoy it long term.

You don't want to spend $40K on a brand new truck, but you'll pay $28K for a 6 year old truck with 73K miles?

At least look for a better deal on a used one! I bought a 2015 off-road crew cab with 45K miles in 2017 for $27-28K. The one you're looking at is way overpriced.

Shop around. Cargurus.com is a great place to find a car!

Also, you can get a new SR crew cab 4×4 for about $32K from what I see. I'm sure it will depend on your local market, though.
