There isnt any other good new truck you can get for any cheaper, plus if you buy it for $40k, you can drive it for 3 years, and if you want, sell it for like $35k still.... because of how well these hold their value, tacomas are one of the only trucks/cars that actually make financial sense to buy new

Not sure where you are located, but do you need an off-road?

a 4x4 SR5 would look similar and a basic platform that you could mod the crap out of.

I’ve seen some REALLY nice SR5’s tastefully modded that look fantastic.

Grill, rims etc and you can have a good looking truck for a good amount less.

yeah it’s about 33k where I’m at. Plus taxes and extended warranty if I get it. That’s still a $550 monthly payment.

They might bargain even lower. Plus, new car might mean better interest rate. It's worth a look.

Otherwise, I'm sure you'll find a better deal if you keep looking. Good luck on the search!

How much are you selling your 98 for? I sold my 98 PreRunner for 10k, helped a ton with the 3rd gen purchase.

I was at that pinnacle where the 1st gen was worth about as much as I'd ever get out of it (I had actually bought it for 7k 6 years ago), so I decided to sell. It only had 98k miles.

The dealer I got mine from had like 15 used ones on the lot, all were $30k+. One had 133,000 on it, still marked at $33k. Just nuts.

That said. My 04 Powerstroke booked at $42k new. Decal was in the glove box when I bought it. Back in about 2016-17, I got to thinking. New Powerstrokes were hardly to be had under about $60k. Yet we all talk about inflation. Inflation from 2004 to 2017 was 28%. So that $42,000 was adjusted to about $54,000. Plus minimum $2000 for an automatic, and it's nothing to come up with a few thousand in options. So that $60k on new diesels isn't outrageous, and thus $35k on a Tacoma apparently isn't too nutty. I still think it is, but I paid it, so...
