The dynamic modular design was a top priority. A permanent camper is not what I go for, but to each his own! Most of the time I will be sleeping alone at a trail head prior to a day in the mountains. On those days/nights I don't need a full platform (or really even the platform at all). But now I can have a friend come along and have enough width to sleep two dudes side by side without awkward spooning.

    list is growing fast
It’s only awkward for the little spoon getting a half boner in the back all night.

I really like this setup. I'm wondering, though, if the hinge negates some of the rigidity of the platform. Have you noticed it sagging at all? It seems like the right half of the platform would only be as strong as the hinge allows. The left side has the support of the left ledge and the joist, so it's most likely pretty solid. Any info would be great, thanks!

The hinges have screws every 2 inches or so i would imagine it would be pretty strong. If you where worried about it you could screw three short lengths of angle Iron to the middle support to just catch the lip of the hinged side.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
I'm working on a "system" that makes use of side to side deck panels as per the original post, AND takes advantage of the under deck storage units to limit any "flexing".
Not that I feel flexing is in any way a show stopper for my sleeping comfort. ;-)
Now on the look for durable plastic totes that are just about 9 inches high and 4 feet long ;-

Awesome thread. Going to start my platform this week. Will be testing it out in 2 weeks. Got a nice Tempur-pedic pad to put down :)

Built my platform today. I needed something that worked well both for camping and for work. Enables me to carry my equipment for work, and can be removed without the help of a second person.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I am really interested on doing a setup just like this on my 2nd gen. On the drivers side is this secured at all? Or just resting on the fender/lip on the bed?
    Thanks

Mine was alot more simpler that allowed you to use the bottom when not in use. Basically, two identical boards but on had a 2x4 screwed on lengthwise as to allow both boards to sag together. When not in use, put one on top of the other to access bottom. Also eliminates the need for a middle support
