Lived there 30 years. On the west side. My kids were the 4th generation of their Moms family to graduate from their highschool. Just moved down here a few years ago and I'm up there all the time, in the city, not the Burbs'. It can be, but the gangs focus is other gangs. I've never felt in danger. 6 years behind a bar and the most violence I had to deal with was cops beating the crap out of each other and threatening anyone who tried to intervene with death. Came back a couple days later to talk about what great time they had. 2nd worst, fireman. Shots fired only once, and that was a couple o' gang bangers, over a 'woman'.

I guess my point is, it's dangerous for dangerous people, or those lacking common sense. My son was taken to a hospital Memorial Day weekend 2018 as a John Doe, unconscious, left temple and orbital bone crushed. Stayed in a coma for 6 days, hospital 3.5 months. Just now is he functioning 'normally' again. Some of you may know the lasting impact of a TBI (traumatic brain injury), it can be rough.
Point is he was doing shots at 3:30 am at a 4 am bar and got belligerent with the wrong dude. I refer you to the first sentence of this paragraph...

I grew up by the ocean, spending as much time as possible in the mountains a couple hours away. I moved into Chicago kickin' and screamin'. Moved out the same way. I absolutely love the place. Again...the city. Not the burbs.
