1ST Gen Suspension Torque Specifications

It seems this gets asked a lot. I pulled the torque specs below from my 2000 Toyota FSM. This is for Front & Rear Suspension with some 2WD specs as applicable.

Bumping an old thread looking for advice.

What's the highest torque spec for a 1st gen tacoma?

Reason I'm asking:

I am looking to purchase a 1/2" torque wrench for higher torque specs. My current 3/8" only goes up to 100 ft-lbs and I wouldn't want to use it for anything near that value or slightly above.

So I'm looking at 1/2" torque wrenches for the larger specs. The 1/2" I'm looking at comes in a range of 20-150 ft-lbs or 30-250 ft-lbs. The latter seems excessive and the former seems like it would be more accurate/precise given the smaller range? Or am I just making that up?

I have one that goes 20 to 150 ft-lbs and gets used for 99.9% of everything.
I also have the one that goes from 50 to 300 ft-lbs and I think I bought it for one nut on the Tundra.

What torque wrench do you have for the 20-150 ft-lbs? Those seem to be nearly twice the price than the 30-250 ft-lbs ones.

For the 4WD Taco/4Runner, my old haynes manual has the following:
'Damper rod nut' (assuming this is the shock top-hat nut): 22 ft-lbs
'Upper Nuts (three nuts)': 47 ft-lbs

Can someone verify/confirm these values? Was there a typo in the OP, is the Haynes manual wrong, or what gives?

Good info! How do you get a torque wrench on the top hat 3 nuts? Wheel well in the way! I can do the front one but not the back two!

 

I had to use a wrench and a lot of patience. I had to do in increments since the space is so tight. I should’ve bought a pass-through socket set/wrench, maybe I would’ve done it a lot faster.

 

I got these torque spec sheets awhile back from @Speedytech7 , they've come in very handy for me on a number of occasions

I ended up snapping the lower shock absorber bolt due to see the torque spec on General Spring saying 115 ft/lbs.

Did I read that wrong? Looks like it should have been 53 ft/lbs.

 

yea 115 ft lbs seems much just for a lower shock mount, hence snapping of the bolt.

 

maybe they mixed the front lower mount with the rears, only thing I can see that kind of makes sense.

 

Yeah could be but those instructions are for leaf springs! I sent them a friendly email to let them know. Also, should bolts for the suspension be torqued with the weight on the wheels or while jacked up?

 

I would believe weight should be on the wheels before tightening those bolts like leaf springs and control arms.

 

Weight on the wheels depends on the bushings. If using poly bushings, you do not need to have the vehicle on the ground when torquing the bolts. If using rubber bushings, then you do want the weight on them

 

Yep, if using OE rubber bushings the vehicle should be set on the ground before tightening as they have a serrated metal sleeve that locks the bushing in place.
