vF Tuner for the 3.5L Tacoma

You have a 2019, so I would guess that you're pretty familiar with the hot garbage that Toyota gave us for the Stock tune? There was a lot left on the table.

 

Lol Apparently. I’m waiting on my OV tune kit to ship. I’m more than a little anxious to get the premium tune flashed. I’m using a Pedal Commander atm - which has been fun - but obviously doesn’t add power, efficiency, or fix the weird shifting from the transmission.

I do have Injen’s new Evo CAI installed as well as Flowmaster’s FlowFx catback. So maybe I’ll be seeing an even greater performance increase.

 

Just an FYI, it's not recommended to use pedal commander with the tunes.

 

Folks that I know with PCs have ditched them either when they flashed or not long after. Lots of benefits with this tune.


For the intake and exhaust, they will not help you.

Folks dynoed with no filter and saw no bump. Some intakes can be detrimental as @OVTune posted recently.

There are specific areas to get more out of an exhaust with our setup, and it isn't from the muffler / tail. Although, the tune does change the exhaust note for the better.

Just level setting expectations there.

 

That’s great to know. Hopefully, I’m not screwed. I guess I’ll find out soon-ish. Do you know what post it was that OVtune advised where some intakes could hurt the tune? For the record, this Evo CAI is a closed box with a cone filter.

 

It should be back in this thread or the Dev thread and was posted in the past few days.

It was about intakes that move the MAF sensor closer to the throttle body. The flow disturbance of the TB messes up the airflow through the sensor.

 

I was curious about that. I wouldn’t have been using it with the tune regardless. Thank you for letting me know if I later decided differently.

 

Ooh okay. If that’s the case then I should be fine. The MAF sensor is basically in the exact same location as stock.

 

That should be good.

 

Same experience here. Other trucks that used PC have decided to stop using it and sell it....there is just no need after a proper ECU update is flashed.

I'm running 2.0 now and love it but I wouldn't mind trying this one.

Don’t get your hopes up. My cai was the same type as yours. I even had the big air scoop attached. I thought the truck ran better until I pulled it off and just used an Hps silicon tube with a dry filter. Truck runs so much better now.

 

Even if that ends up being the case for me, since I’ll have access to the tuning software, I could just tweak it to benefit from my CAI I’m assuming. From what I recall in the past, vehicles can be tuned to take more advantage of the increased airflow of a CAI instead of it being a hinderance.

If all else fails, I still have my stock air box. I can simply reinstall it and sell my CAI.

 

Can you also describe what "better" means going from your fancy CAI to a silicon tube with a dry filter? Which OVtune were you using? Which CAI were you using specifically before? You said yours was the same type as mine - which I'm assuming meant in general a closed box with a ram intake? Thanks!

 

More power. Much smoother. Just runs better.
The Hps is a silicon tube with the MAF sensor connection,etc. It’s not really just a silicon tube. I use an aFe pro filter.
Am running one of MD’s custom tunes that he has adapted for me quite a few times.
Was running the aFe Momentum GT cai with the dynamic air scoop.I just remembered how well the truck ran before and wanted to see if I was right. It does run better than with the aFe.It was like there was just too much going on with the aFe.But remember this is just what I “feel.” No dyno proof or anything.

 

Cool deal. Thanks for the replay. I think the biggest difference between my CAI and yours is that the aFe Momentum GT moved the MAF sensor super close to the throttle body as to where my InJen Evo kept it in the same location. I was told by another user that the CAI issue for the OVtune was related to moving the MAF. So I’m thinking my CAI will probably work fine with the tune. I could be wrong but I’ll definitely find out!

 

My experience exactly but now with an AFE drop in filter. These engines do so much better without CAI's. I'm sure via VF a tune could be tweaked to accommodate a CAI and benefit from, but until then it'll sit in my attic. Frankly my truck is running so good now I could care less.

EDIT - I was running the AFE Momentum with the air scoop.

Is the new Credit server / Credit values in place in this version?
