Just had a locksmith tell me the same thing. He wasn't able to program the one I got, and thinks it's due to having four buttons. He said according to his book, they shouldn't be listing RAV4 on those. Grr. I think I'm going to buy the cable and see if I can monkey around with these things myself.

Does anyone know exactly how to tell what chip or lack of that each Tacoma model is equipped with?

Most likely the simplest solution w flip. Transfer inside from old fob & cut out the chip from old key (theres a slot chip). I do want the key w/ fob attached at bottom tho but programming might be an issue.
    $10 + another $5-10 to cut maybe.

Go to the dealer with the registration and your matching ID and ask the for the key code by VIN. They will look it up in the computer and give you a key code. Don't have the dealer make you a key. They're not locksmiths and can't be trusted to cut it correctly. Take that key code to a locksmith and have them cut you a cheap $7 all metal key. That key won't start your truck, but then you will have a nice new key that you can work off from. Try your new key in the locks. If it works good then you can decide which immobilizer option you want to go with. If it doesn't work good, then you need to have the locks worked on by the locksmith.
