Walbro or Factory Denso fuel pump???

Ok so my fuel pump is staring to take a dump. My truck has been running like crap lately and finally almost pinpointed it to my fuel pump. I have 136,000 mi so needs changing anyways. I was going to buy either walbro or factory denso. What would you guys suggest. Thanks.

Ive seen that kit but its around 5 to 6 hundred dollars, I know walbros are good just not sure when compared to factory.

 

The URD upgrade kit is $155. The Toyota replacement is around $600.

Awesome...is it basically plug and play or do I have to cut hoses. I heard the walbro fuel pump itself is a bit longer then the factory one making it so I have to cut that hard line about an inch for it to fit.

Go for the walbro. I have run it in many applications where stock wasn't good enough or too expencive. I might purchase Gadgets kit soon myself.

 

I dont know how much the one for the Taco or FJ flow, but I'm running one in my 97 Eclipse. And its one loud mofo. Its a 255LPH High pressure unit, so maybe the ones for the Taco or FJ are quieter. But the walbros use metal gears in their pumps which are inherently louder from the start then the yota's plastic gears (that is if they're all plastic like the Supra Denso pumps) Definetly not something I would want in a daily driver.

If they're not noisy, then I wouldn't hesitate at all. The one in my Eclipse has been in it for years and has never given me problems.

 

I have it. It's not noisy. Easy install. Fairly inexpensive.

I would do it again.

 

Do you have to drop the tank for this ? Is there a kit to put a filter on the rail to protect the pump or do you just run it til it drops dead. ?

 

You have to drop the tank. The URD kit comes with an external filter.

Is the gas going threw the external filter before it hits the pump...if not I dont understand why it would be nessaccary...unless its one of those "hell ya i gots an external filter dude" just to say you have one

yes.

gasoline fill stations have pumps on their nozzle lines, and the in-tank pumps in cars typically have a sock or screen to filter again. so that takes care of the fuel being clean before the pump. so, once the fuel is pumped, it gets filtered again by a fine media filter so it doesn't affect injection.

that's weird because i had a 255 high pressure unit in my civic for almost 8 years...with no rear interior over the fuel pump cover, which is within reach from the driver's seat, and it was only a hair noisier than stock. it was noisy when priming and minimally noisy when running. nothing bad.

 

Thanks. I had a filter on the rail on my 2000 Tacoma. When I changed it it was full of gunk. There is no filter on the rail on my 2008. So is this sock (which doesn't sound like much of a filter and can't be changed) supposed to do the job of the big filter that use to be on the rail. The one on the rail looked like the one in the pic in this post. Thanks.

i'm just saying typically there is a pre-filter before the pump, usually a plastic screen "sock", and then another finer filter after the pump, as the use of an external filter was questioned when a pump is changed.

regarding these trucks in particular, apparently the reason we don't have filters on the rail or in the engine bay of these trucks is because it is in the tank. i am not sure if the OE pumps have a pre-filter and a post filter, or the pre-filter handles all of the filtering, but regardless it is maintenance free and in the tank. when you change the pump, that might also change the filtering capabilities.

i am guessing that someone would use an external filter like coupe showed above used w/ upgrade kits because the OE in-tank filtering ability is changed in some way or has been shown to be insufficient for certain high fuel demand/high power applications.

I believe with the OEM setup you have to replace the whole assembly to replace the filter. Thus the pump along with the filter costing 500+. The URD kit is cheaper and you don't have to replace the pump when the filter clogs up, or drop the tank to replace the filter.

 

Ordered the URD upgrade kit....hope all goes well and solves my engine lack of power I'll post and let everyone know how it goes...heard instructions are top notch...

 

I'm helping with the URD pump install tonight. Should be done in an hour or so, I'm thinking lifting the bed would be easier than dropping the tank...we'll see. Probably gonna end up gettin one for my truck too if it makes that big of a difference. I'd like to have the added protection of an external filter before the rail, I'm approaching 30k miles on the truck, and have read that's when the stock pump starts to get clogged up anyhow.
