i spoke to the dealer about the tick and see if i could get it fixed... they said it was a normal thing and that it was the injectors cycling. so i started running a quality injector cleaner through it every oil change and the tick has decreased but its still there... very annoying

I'm a Mater Tech of 20 years.Ticking is NORMAL and I'd actually rather have one with a slight tick on a mechanical valvetrain.A "loose" valve is a happy valve!!! Less likely to eventually burn a valve.Tight valves are much more prone to getting burnt with carbon build-up. Don't mess with it.Its fine and totally normal.

My 09 ticks and my 08 did as well. Normal. A lot of valve noise as well, more when I use Mobil 1 or when it gets close to an oil change.

The ticking was a little noticeable when the Taco was new. After the initial couple tanks of gas, I switched to premium Shell or Chevron. Still hear the ticking on low RPM acceleration, when the tranny is trying to take advantage of the engine's torque by staying in the higher gear, but it is much quieter. Not even sure if the gas is the reason and don't mean to make this a discussion about fuel octane at all, just a personal hypothesis.

Glad I found this thread! I had noticed the ticking a day after purchase and driving to the insurance company. At first I thought it was someone elses car, but after 15mins. I realized it was mines. The tick woul dbe suttle with the windows down, but amplified when a car drove pass or next to me.

Reading that this is normal has taken away my concern. I was thinking something was wrong.

    In progress...
Bought my new 2011 with 84 miles last week, and I was pretty surprised at how noticable the tick was (sounds like a manifold leak on the old '73 F-100 I drove in high school). My 2001 wasn't ultra smooth, but it wasn't near as noisy as the new Taco. Of course, I rushed here and figured out that it seems to be normal... And as long as it's normal, I'm fine with the tick. :D

I suppose that all depends on ones interpretation of normal. As of this writing, there have been 4,028 visits to this poll. And only 369 votes and you can scroll up to the top and look at the results. However, my point in starting this poll was to determine what percentage of Tacoma's tick. I now realize this is not exactly a scientific poll because it depends on user desire to participate. Think about it!!! If you Tacoma does not tick, you'd likely have little to no interest in reading let alone participating in the poll. I understand some of the 4,028 visits may be repeat visits but I'm wondering how many Tacoma owners that don't have the tick who didn't even visit this poll. I have been asking around from family, the office, on the streets as the opportunity presents itself and even count the ones I test drove before buying and getting stuck with a loose valve tolerance that aggravates the hell out of me and my personal results are more like 50% of the Tacoma's don't tick.
If you really look at the results of this poll and give the odds of non-tickers posting up, I think there is a basis for my chiming in and writing this post.
Before the defenders advise again that they all tick and if yours does not, you just can't hear it…. Or you love the tick… Or just drown the tick with the radio or a high performance exhaust. I say this… What is normal vs. what is excessive ??
Sure, every combustion engine makes noise. I can stand next to an engine and tell you if it is running or not. They all make noise. The question here is what is excessive. I can say in my book, My Tacoma ticks louder than normal and I don't like it. I want on of the many quiet ones I've heard out there.
I'm also ticked off (pun intended) at the dealer. When I special ordered and then picked it up. I had never heard of the "Tacoma Tick" and had complained about the valve train noise… The salesman told me to give it 1k miles to break in and he thought it would stop.
PS. I still have right at 1k miles and would love to sell it. See post number 51 and 53 if you need pictures. It's a 2011 double cab 2x4 with sport package and most options.

My truck has had ticking twice. The first was caused by a bad catalytic converter and the second by the flux plate in the transmission.

Both were replaced under warranty (first one was at 60,000 miles, second at 97,000)

200 miles on mine. No tick at all. Thats why I bought the 4cyl. Much quieter. However, if I needed the power, I would have had to have gone with the 6cyl. Traded my 08 F250 Supercrew Deisel so this thing seems really quiet.

It was made with an inexpensive Samsun slider phone so the quality is poor. I'm going to get a better recording soon but wanted to post this up to see what comments you guys have about a $30k vehicle that ticks as such.

My 97 Honda knocked. I put 50k on it with that knock. I sold it with 190k miles on it, and on the day I sold it I still wouldn't have thought twice about driving across the country in that car.

My 2000 durango with the 5.9 was supper smooth and quiet. I couldn't trust that thing to get me to Walmart and back.

My Tacoma with the 4cyl ticks with 100k on it. Until that tick becomes a knock, I'm not worried the least bit about it.
