Hey there so I saw some info on this but wanted some specific feedback.
I bought my 2020 Tacoma off road TRD in September. I have put 2,300 miles on it. It has the tow package and I now have my travel trailer. I drive in s4 around town cause it handles better.
I towed in S4 ect and towed great but I have a scan gauge 2 and my trans temp went up at times to as high as 222 and hovered around 190. when I’m not towing it’s at 184-199
This seems high for a new truck and low miles! Is it? I’m wondering if anyone has had a cooling system put in to help? I got an appt with Toyota on Tuesday to check it all out but wanted some feedback first to see if I really need the apt.

Thanks for the help and any info

220 is hot but not scary, you’ll be fine.
Is that TF1 or TF2? One is in the pan and is more steady, the other is at the torque converter and has spikes.

Aww ok! It is TF2. It’s the only one I could get to read with codes.

for it to be running 198 around town in non stop and go traffic seems odd!

Somebody on TW did some research on that chart. That is if the fluid is at that temp for 1 hour. He actually emailed an engineer and got the rest of the story. If you spike from time to time it’s no big deal. I have seen 230 at the torque converter and about 10 degrees less at the pan. The cooler drops the tc temp to 200 in about 10 seconds.I see from 170 to low 200s around town depending on winter and summer temps.

    =====EDIT=====
I have a huge aftermarket cooler that is why it drops quickly

Okay, perfect when I call the service dept I’ll give them all this helpful info and see if they still want to look at things or if it’s normal. Thank you and refreshing to hear cause it did drop quick so that makes sense.
I just worry about climbing some of the mountain passes around me with the trailer and it doing that.

    set Ur baseline

anywhere between 180-200 degrees seems reasonable at legal speeds flat/lev

around town wont help U much because each stop lite . I between is different

towing 222 doente seem out o line yet I know not the terrain or what U tow

both will determine actual temps rather than a should or supposed to be conversation

There are 2 temps- pan and torque converter.
Torque Converter is usually goes up while idling In traffic and being in unlocked state.
Also if you drive in s4(s3), there is a wide range of unlocking speeds and accelerator angles compare to 5th and 6th. That means that you most likely driving with the torque converter unlocked and producing the heat.

I also have an OV tune that seems to keeps trans temps lower because of changed shift points.

We tow a 19ft 4800lb trailer all over B.C., started out small and watching the SG2 for temps, after a dozen trips and a few years I’ve realized it does fine. S4 and ect helps a ton, and letting it rev higher than our 2nd Gen as well. Atf Temps peak around 230, and go down as soon as you level out.

I’ve thought about adding another cooler, but so far I’ve not needed it.

That's about what I have towing wise too but probably closer to 5100 lbs. have not seen any issues.

May need to add pan temperature. The pan is attached to the cooler via the thermostat (if a tow package).
Also , some folks would pin the thermostat to keep it open all the time or for the time of towing.

I am hoping my 3000-3300LB fully loaded tear drop will be of no issues. I'd hate to burn through a transmission on a new truck. Are the after market coolers worth it?

You’ll be fine. My OR never exceeds 194 while pulling a 3300lb Keystone Bullet. That’s both TF1 and TF2.
