Shout out to TW folks for brining this to my attention. I was in for a routine ToyotaCare oil change and thought I'd mention this TSB to see if they would do the update. The service advisor had no knowledge of it but wrote down what I told him about the gear shifting (or lack thereof). They ended up updating my truck under warranty, no questions asked. Now it seems to glide from one gear to the next at more predictable points and doesn't seem to be sitting at 3000 rpm all the time. Subjectively, I seem to be getting better gas mileage as well, but I'm clearly biased and haven't done any formal tests.

I have the ECT always-on mod but have been keeping it off since this update. I just haven't felt that lack of power that I normally feel with ECT off. I'm thrilled, but also a little miffed that Toyota couldn't figure this out sooner and didn't make it well known to the consumer.

How long have you been running it? That’s how I felt when I got a TSB and it relearned its stupid ways about a week later. VfTune is the only way IMO

I flashed it on 12/4 and have driven on a couple of road trips since then. Still just as good as new. I experienced what your talking about with previous updates, but this one has been different.

I'm sure this information can be found somewhere in this thread, but 209 pages is a LOT.

Before I go for a full on tune, I'd like to check my ECU & flash it if necessary. There is a local shop that can do this for me.

    My question is ;

For my 2018, which ECU is best? I too have a problem with the gear searching.

    Thanks!!

The latest available version is best. At the moment for 2018s and as shown in the 1st Post, that is 04A61 for ATs and 04A71 for MTs.

I'll reserve judgement, but yeah sounds like they got you in to get the recall done. There are a couple people up by you I think. They may be able to help you out so you don't have to buy the cable.

I agree, I don't see the reluctance for them to do it. I guess from Toyota's perspective, time is money, so they don't want to do it for everyone. For reasons that aren't completely clear to me, it added another hour and a half to my oil change appointment.

By creating a solution, they have in fact acknowledged that the problem exists, so there are really no grounds for Toyota to say that they won't fix it.

Work Orders earlier in this thread show a consistent 0.4hr billed to Toyota. The actual update takes all of ten minutes. It's crazy that they won't do this minimal task for customer satisfaction.

They are blowing smoke up your ass.

The dealer when I got mine updated said they just flash it on request, that it is a known issue.

I have a Tactrix and a spare laptop. I’ll let you flash it yourself on the street next to my driveway if you want. I’ve done my own truck but don’t really consider myself an expert yet but it’s basically a double click and follow the prompts. I’ll help you out but you’re on your own risk wise if anything goes wrong.

I can download the file too if you point it out to me, shoot me a DM. It’d have to be after my kids are asleep on a weeknight.

You're assuming they actually take it for a test drive in the first place...

Same as flashing a tune. Ignition on, engine off.

I’ve searched this thread and several responses say no button presses. Or once you double click the cuw it instructs you to press once?

    Thanks!

once you open the cuw, it gives you step by step instructions. It’s pretty hard to screw up

Thanks, do I need to have techstream open? Sorry for the silly questions, just want to make sure I understand the process.

Nope. Just open the .cuw file and it will work just fine.
