the other day it was raining and i was driving through mud. as i lost traction in 2wd when a horrible noise started coming from somewhere near the front axel when the loss of traction light was blinking in second gear and it started to smell very bad. i then switched to 4wd to see if anything changed and sure enough when the traction light came on the noise came again along with the smell and i have no clue what it could be. Any ideas?

Sounds like traction control doing its thing. Kinda sounds like a duck guack.

Yep. The ABS acts like a limited-slip differential and the noise is probably the ABS pump.

ABS is the anti-locking brakes, I don't know if or how the traction control affects the "simulated" limited slip. Also, in most cars, pushing the traction button does not fully turn off traction; likewise in some cars holding down the traction control to "fully" disable it also does not (always) turn traction off completely.

Do you have crawl control? Put the truck in 4-low and use crawl control. The sound should be the same, as the ABS system will actively engage. Likewise on hills, the ABS works to hold the car from rolling backwards (at least on the autos). The manual also mentions this.

    Should sound like this:

The smell was your brakes. They're part of how traction control works.
