I have the Whisperlite Internationale. It can take multiple types of fuels. I love it. packs up really easy. fairly light. I can make a small 6 oz bottle of camping fuel last almost a whole week if I use it right.

I usually go with someone that is packing heat. I very rarely let myself go out without a firearm. The little bit of added weight (to me personally) is worth hauling around if it is going to save my life.

if allowed, yes i will carry some kind of weapon or a means of self defense. Usually a can of bear spreay on my belt and small shot gun or a .22lr. you never really need more than a .22

If you are all up for a camping trip, I'm headed out 12/31-1/2/11 to Pisgah Lava tubes. Should be a good time.

yes. it seems pretty durable. I have had it for about 4 years now (maybe longer). I am fairly rough on my stuff as well. It has held up just fine. the only complaint i have is when you build the pressure in the gas cylinder, it is really hard to unscrew the pump when you are done using the stove. I made a few little tools to help with this as well but if time allows, i just let the stove sit and cool down and the pressure eventually decreases. otherwise, it is an awesome stove. I can boil a decent sized pot of water in just a few minutes.
x2 on the bear spray. its saved me once.

A knife is about it. I just think that carrying a gun asks for more trouble. To each their own tho.

Never used these, but I've looked into both when I was buying my stove. I personally like the whisperlite better. The multi-fuel capabilities is what sells it for me!

Yup, I be giving some reviews shortly. Need to test my new gear in the elements first!

Good choice on the tent! The Solitare is a Solid!

Sorry, been away for a while.

Yes, this is true. Unless you get the Group Cooking System (basically just a pot that attaches to the top). But I personally don't like taking all that stuff with me into the backcountry. I've got a nice Coleman 2-burner propane for my "extended-luxury" camping.

I saw in your later posts that you're getting a Whisperlite. That's a good choice, too.

Hey Jerry, I had that same stove, not sure if you had this issue but I had to buy the heat diffuser plates otherwise the btu's were just too much.

Not really. I have a dive knife I carry for when the multi-tool won't do the job, so I guess it could serve as protection, but I have never needed it for anything.

Bear spray is a good thing to have where it's needed. I've never needed it, but I know people who have.

When I go backpacking, the general idea is for me to get away from people, so I don't really worry about the need for a firearm. That's a couple pounds of weapon and ammunition I'd rather leave out of my pack. I carry enough shit I don't use as it is! :D

(car camping is another story -- I generally like to camp at reputable campsites, namely state and national parks -- but some places are sketchy and it's nice to have a little "piece of mind" under the back seat.)

As for wildlife, I think that general common sense (don't cook where you sleep, etc.) and a sharp eye work well. Besides, unless you camp in grizzly territory, there are very few animals you can't just scare away with loud yelling and beating on stuff.

good choices! you wont regret it! I just looked at when I bought the internationale stove (i like to keep track of how long i keep my camping stuff). I bought it back in 07 just to give you an idea of how nice it is. I have not had to change o rings or seals or anything. just wipe it off when your done and you are good to go.

I would play with it while you are at home (outside) so you get a good idea of how to light it and everything before you are in the woods. warning... it does make a nice size fireball at first when its burning the excess gas out of the bottom pan.

I am thinking about getting the solitare tent as well. seems like a nice sturdy tent just looking at the ones i saw in Bass Pro
